Kangana Ranaut Talked About Safe Sex, Being Sexually Active And The Taboos Around It And We Think She Hit The Nail On The Head

Whenever I sit down to see a Hollywood movie by myself, I can’t help but feel myself draw an instant comparison between the lives that are shown in the movies and the kind we lead.  From the fashion, to the lifestyle, to even the equation kids share with their parents in English movies, everything is so alluring that I can’t help want to adopt all of it. But closer to home and to reality, we know how it’s only a far fetched dream, because the only sex talk we are bound to have with our parents, starts and ends with them telling us not to have it. A concern, that Manikarnika actress, Kangana Ranaut agrees with, as she recently opened up about the topic at the India Today Mind Rocks 2019.

In a session called, ‘Never Say Die: The Queen of Reinvention’, Kangana Ranaut addressed various taboos that have been built around the concept of sex, and says how it must not be made a big deal out of.  She said, “Sex is an important aspect of everyone’s life. When you want sex, just have it. Don’t be obsessed. There was a time when you were told to marry someone, and your emotions were directed towards that person. In history, because of invasions, people’s ideas are still there, that our scriptures don’t allow sex. Parents should be happy with children having sex. Children should have responsible sex. My parents were shocked when they find out I was sexually active. Parents should encourage children to have sex.”

And if we were to recall, our parents have always been rather awkward around the concept and topic of sex. I remember, how while watching movies, my mother would slyly start conversations during an intense make-out scene on the screen, just to avoid us from watching it. And even now, and I am in my mid-twenties, things haven’t changed as much as they should’ve. But we are glad, that the actress who is always known to be vocal about her thoughts, brought this topic up.

It is the very duty of parents and a foundation of a healthy and responsible relationship, for them to be okay with their adult children indulging into something so natural, and must find a way to educate them about the do’s and don’ts of the act. It is often when children are misinformed about sex, that they end up getting tied in unwanted pregnancies or complications, that could’ve been avoided with simple educative talk by the parents.

Of course, it is easier said than done, and we can not overlook the fact that talking about something so intimate with parents is as awkward as it gets. But with changing times and a generation that is advancing by the second, addressing such concerns is more important especially if it means breaking the taboos and stereotypes around it. There is no shame in admitting to something that, by definition, is a basic need, and maybe if parents decide to come halfway into understanding it, we may be able to create a generation that participates in responsible and safe sex.
