Sushmita Sen Turned 44 Today And She Makes Us Believe That Age Is Just A Number

Ever since I was a child, I had immense admiration for Sushmita Sen. I remember vividly, we had a school assignment in which we had to stick pictures of the women we’re proud of. While every kid in my class included only the likes of Mother Teresa and Jhansi Ki Rani, I included Sushmita Sen among others. I used to watch her interviews, awestruck at her school of thought and her headstrong personality. So as the gorgeous lady turns 44 today, maybe we should all talk about what an inspiration she is.

We’ve grown up in a society that is hell-bent on age-appropriateness. What does that even mean? How did this even become a thing? If you aren’t making big bucks by 27, you feel like you’ve been left far behind in the race. Not married by 30? Something must be wrong with the woman, they will have you believe. If you have children at 25, they say she must be too domesticated. And if you’re 36 and still haven’t reproduced, too ambitious for her own good, they will say. Sushmita Sen didn’t give in to this time-bound pressure and proved that age is just a number! Here’s how.

Became a global star at 18

While we were bunking lectures and trying hard not to crush on that cutie in our class, Sushmita Sen was prepping herself to wear a crown. She won the title of Miss Universe at the age of 18, and became the first Indian in a while to do so. They say at 18 you can get carried away with that kind of success but did she? She sailed through it all with the kind of maturity I still don’t have at 28.

Was at the peak of her career at 23

She made her Bollywood debut at the age of 20 with Dastak but she became an A-lister with Biwi No 1, alongside Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. Her performance was widely appreciated and with that at 23, she officially arrived as a Bollywood actress.

Became a mother at 24

She had won an award for her performance in Biwi No 1; her career was shaping up really well. So what prompted her to adopt a child? “The wisest decision I made at the age of 24 was to become a mother. It stabilised my life. People think it was a great act of charity and wonderful action but it was self-preservation. It was me protecting myself,” she had expressed in an interview.

Will marry at 44

When you’re that headstrong, society can’t force you into getting married by a specific age. Neither can they say after crossing a certain age that a woman is not marriageable. She is 44 and is going strong with boyfriend Rohman Shawl. Buzz is he has popped the question and she has said a big fat yes!

Can give a 25-year-old a run for her money

Sushmita Sen is a powerhouse of energy and works out without a hint of tiredness. I, on the other hand, go breathless 10 minutes on a cross-trainer. She is fit as a fiddle and has the enthusiasm of a 20-year-old. Please pass on that magic potion, woman!
