Riteish Deshmukh Says His Ego Was Hurt When He Was Called Genelia’s Husband. Wow, Another Fragile Male Ego

I refuse to believe that all men are the same. They aren’t all misogynistic chauvinists with an ego more fragile than glass. But then again, doing what I do, I see more men fitting this description than I would like to admit. The most recent being actor Riteish Deshmukh. I have always loved his movies and his comic timing, but the way he spoke about his wife Genelia D’Souza’s success has completely overturned my opinion of him. It was truly disappointing. How can you not be proud of the work your partner does? What kind of partnership is that?

You see, the couple recently appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show, where Riteish shared a story that made us raise our eyebrows at him. Though the episode will air this weekend, the promo showed him talking about the time they played in the Celebrity Cricket League in Bengaluru. He said that he noticed two players from the South team whispering and calling him Genelia’s husband. Just being recognized by his wife’s name hurt bruised his ego. Do you see why I was disappointed?

While narrating the incident Riteish Deshmukh said, “We were playing Celebrity Cricket League in Bengaluru. There was a South team from which two players were whispering ‘Genelia’s husband’. My ego was hurt and I told them, ‘I am Genelia’s husband here, in Maharashtra it’s Riteish’s wife’. You know what he told me, ‘Sir, Riteish’s wife in one state but Genelia’s husband in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu…”

Riteish Deshmukh couldn’t stand the fact that people called him by Genelia’s name so had to clarify that she is known by his name. However, I am not surprised this happened at The Kapil Sharma Show. It’s not exactly known for its open-minded comedy. From Kapil hitting on every actress that steps foot on his set to him getting laughs by mocking and sometimes even fat-shaming people, it’s the ideal platform for Riteish to share a story about him getting butt hurt because in the South, his wife is more well-known than he is.

I understand that Riteish said it in a very lighthearted, breezy way and intended it to be a funny story but that doesn’t make it any less problematic. The bottom line is that a lot of men can’t handle it when their wives are more successful or more accomplished than them. And honestly, I find that revolting.

Why couldn’t Riteish Deshmukh just set his ego aside and been proud of the fact that his wife has done so well in the South that people recognize him by her name? He should’ve been proud and not had the irresistible urge to clarify that in Maharashtra she is known as his wife. It’s very disappointing.
