Mia Khalifa Says Porn Doesn’t Really Pay Well. Erm, 8 Lakhs In 3 Months? We’d Say Hers Is A First World Problem

I am sitting at my desk, writing this story out on a day when I am comparatively happier about being an employed individual. We’re approaching the weekend, and that makes me forget the fact that I get paid peanuts. Like a lot of people in my profession…and some other equally unfortunate professions. But hey, we work for the passion, don’t we? At least, that’s how we live through all the drinks we can’t afford and the luxury vacations we couldn’t take. Fuck that, I can’t even afford the last-minute flight fares to Goa in peak season. Then, Mia Khalifa came along to say she made *only* around around $12,000, which comes up to around 8.5 lakhs INR and I want to shake her up.  And all this money she earned in just three months. So, hey, first-world problems much? Okay.

For those of you who are massively confused about the three-month reference above, she just clarified in a video that she worked in the porn industry for just three months. She hasn’t done an adult film in the past five years. Yet, she got really popular and now everybody calls her a porn star. It’s like some tags just don’t leave you. Mia Khalifa also revealed that it was quite difficult finding another job after exiting porn. In an interview with New York Post, Mia revealed what made her so popular in such a brief time. She said, “The turning point, of course, was when I did the hijab scene. That is when the ISIS death threats came in, all of the news broke out — globally. Not just in America. It was trending on Twitter, it was all over the news. I was banned from a handful of countries.” In fact, her followers on Instagram went from 400 to 200,000 because of that very scene. However, it really makes me think – if she’s left the business, why is she still using her porn star name? Honestly, it’s smart to make the use of your popularity. But then again, don’t say you had “difficulty finding a normal job”!

Now this got me all inquisitive and I went ahead to find out how much adult actors really get paid. According to Independent.co.uk, a female performing straight sex, can earn $1,000 and for lesbian sex she can make $700-800. Depending on the actor, give or take 10 to 20 per cent. In fact, in the same article, Derek Hay – the founder of LA Direct Models revealed, “For the right girl, for whatever reason which could vary, to do acts like their first anal scene, first interracial scene, first scene with three, four or five guys, those scenes could pay premium rates. A company’s studios would offer a particular girl a much higher rate to induce her to accept the offer to shoot that kind of scene. That’s always been the case, but in the past few years a number of different studios have put a lot of prominence on those kind of scenes and the rates offered to models to do that have increased markedly.” He also revealed that women are making more money than their male counterparts.

So if you think that porn stars make millions out of a couple of adult films, you’re seriously mistaken. They definitely get paid a lot more than us lesser popular souls, who sit behind their computer screens away from the world. But it hard-earned money (excuse the horrible pun) – it’s not like they are printing money here.
