Kalki Koechlin Opens Up About What She Makes Of The Trolls That Ask Her About Her Pregnancy Out Of A Wedlock.

It is often said, “What they don’t understand, scares them,” and I know all too well to not believe it. The society, as it has been molded, has very little to no imagination when it comes to people breaking free of stereotypes and doing things outside the conventional ways. Be it women wanting to aim for the stars, or young couples choosing to live together before they decide to get married, as long as it is unconventional, it scares people and makes them do what they know best – criticize and disregard. Something we might not be the only ones to experience, as actress Kalki Koechlin too, has been facing a lot of flak for having a child out of wedlock.

In India, or anywhere for that matter, marriage is always considered a pre-requisite for having children. People completely waive off the possibility that all that it really is, is an ideal situation for society, but something that is still never truly necessary. Which is what must have crossed Kalki’s mind when she thought of going ahead with her first pregnancy with boyfriend Guy Hershberg. Clearly there is no rule to it, but that is not the popular belief among neighboring aunties and well quite a few netizens who have taken the liberty to pass lewd remarks on the Sacred Games actress.

In an interview about her new and upcoming show Bhram, that is touted to be a psychological thriller, the actress was asked about how she felt before she announced to the world she was 5 months pregnant. To that Kalki replied, “I think I was a little nervous about the first announcement, but I also knew that there were going to be judgments that are going to come up. At the same time, whenever I’ve met anyone face to face, like my neighbours, everybody’s been overjoyed and super supportive. Only on social media, of course you have your trolls. So like where’s the husband? How can you do this? And you know, like don’t wear tight clothes, don’t show your belly and all that stuff. So that. That comes with my territory. I’ve been used to doing that for the last 10 years with just being a celebrity. So I am okay. I’m okay right now.”

And as much as we love her for being thick-skinned in this industry and not letting such remarks or unsolicited advice get to her, it is still disheartening to know that people continue to poke their noses where it doesn’t belong. It’s the 21st century, women are taking to power, people are stepping out of societal conforms, so one would like to believe that things really are changing and for the good. But it when such trolls continue to be as superficial as ever, that we are made to question whether or not are we ready to accept children out of wedlock, yet.

Kalki isn’t the first woman in the industry to have had gotten pregnant before getting married. And a personal choice at that too. Actress Amy Jackson too was pregnant before she tied the knot, also veteran actresses like Neena Gupta and Sri Devi were open and proud of being pregnant, regardless of not being married at the time. Guess, we really need to get ourselves to be comfortable with the whole ‘To each his own’ theory, and mind only what is our business.
