5 Very Valid Reasons For Holding Off Marriage Till You’re In Your 30s

By  |

Culture is an interesting thing. It gives you a sense of belonging, values, things you cherish. In India, it comes with a few unwanted extras. For example, it tells us that there is a “marriageable” age, and we reach that age as soon as we have our basic education done. For some, it may be, as soon as we get a job. There is no consideration for where or not we are emotionally ready to take on something as big as marriage. On the contrary, marriage is treated as an initiation into adulthood. We are told that we will “grow up” when we have the responsibility that comes with it. We digress. Point is, we think there may be pros to holding off marriage till you’re in your 30s. Here’s why.

You are emotionally wiser

You can’t deny this one, can you? Your 20s are kind of like a train wreck, emotionally speaking. In your 30s, you’re done with all the drama, you are a little more sorted and you are definitely less volatile.

You know yourself better

It’s crucial to know yourself well before you commit to another person. Otherwise, you enter a serious, lifelong relationship as vulnerable and impressionable. When you know who you are, you’ve a better idea of what you bring to the table.

You have a better sense of what you want in a partner

Hopefully, by the time you reach your 30s, you’ve had a few failed relationships because of which you’ve learnt what you want and don’t want in a relationship.

You can do without getting married

This may sound counter-intuitive, but it’s so important that marriage is not entered into because it is something you need – whether that’s financially, emotionally, or physically. You should get married only and only because you want to!
