5 Myths About Period Sex Busted

When it comes to period sex, the world is pretty much divided in two parts. There are people who will indulge in it, unabashedly. And then there are those whose gag reflex is triggered at the mere mention of it. It’s quite rare to find a middle ground here.

Whether you choose to be pro or anti period sex, it should come from facts and not myths. The thing with myths is that they have the capacity to spread like wild fire. And this is possibly the worst use of word of mouth. Does it cause infections? Will it make you bleed more? Is it safe? So many questions and so many myths surrounding period sex. But fret not ladies, make an informed decision as we debunk most common period sex myths!

Myth 1: You can’t get pregnant

When you have unprotected sex, even during your period, you do run the risk of pregnancy, especially if your cycle is irregular. According to WebMD, sperms can survive in your body for upto five days. Which means if you end up ovulating during that time, it’s possible for you to get preggers.

Myth 2: It’s okay to not wear a condom

You must wear a condom during period sex, and it’s not just to avoid pregnancy. Well, that too, but hey, have you ever heard of STDs? It’s a myth that period blood cannot pass on STDs and STIs, but it can.

Myth 3: Your period will become heavier

A lot of people have this misconception that period sex can make you bleed more. But that has absolutely no truth to it! Dr. Leah Millheiser, director of the Female Sexual Medicine Program at Stanford University had told Insider that it is the contractions from your orgasm that leads to pushing more blood out. But in any way, it doesn’t increase or extend your period.

Myth 4: Period sex can amplify your cramps

It actually does the exact opposite and here’s how. Lauren Streicher, MD, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago told Everyday Health that since orgasms release the feel good hormones (oxytocin and dopamine) it can relieve you of pain and moodiness. All the more reason to have period sex, right?
