Payal Khandwala Turns 5 And Celebrates With This Beautiful SS’17 Collection

Designer label Payal Khandwala turns 5 this spring, and what better way to rejoice the anniversary than by going back to the basics, and focussing on the brand’s core element? Payal Khandwala is a brand that has always been known for its colours and silhouettes, along with creating strong cuts that are simplistic.

“As a philosophy, we have never focused on trends, or even fashion for that matter, because my impetus to establish the distinct grammar of our label has always come from within. Our garments have always maintained a personal point of view, shapes are both free- spirited yet classic, and remain easy but luxurious,” says the designer.

This collection, as you can tell, is on par with the brand’s image; however, it’s a contrast to her previous collection, which incorporated the powerful lion motif. Along the same design line, but a more simplistic in comparison, this Spring-Summer ’17 collection incorporates the rose, which is a reflection of femininity and strength.

Payal adds, “As a painter, I love the idea of a strong visual to communicate a concept. So this season, the starting point of our print story was a cluster of roses — a simple thought, but a strong reference. I conceived them as an antithesis of how we typically see flowers in spring — fragile, in full bloom, and in colour. So when I penciled the artwork, the theme was gentle in theory but bold in execution.”

The colour palette is signature Payal Khandwala, but subtle, basic, and minimalistic, rather than bold jewel-toned. The motif, according to the designer, is both fierce, yet retains femininity, which reflects in the pieces themselves.

While her previous collection was more masculine and boxy, the ‘rose’ is its complete antithesis this season. With palettes of coffee, crimson, indigo, citrine, and leaf green, the Back To Basics collection is a layered mix of pleats, lines, cottons and light silks, in monochromatic black and white as well.
