Malala Shares Her Concern Over The Kashmir Plight And The Internet Is Not Impressed. Oh Well!

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai who has always been vocal about children’s education rights, and has in fact even been shot for standing up for it, is someone that many of us look up to. From being headstrong about what she believes in and to actually working towards driving change, the Pakistani activist has always used her celebrityhood to talk about many social issues that plague the world. The recent one that caught her attention was the turmoil over the scrapping of Article 370 that revokes the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir.

With the dissolution of rticle 370, the special powers and autonomy that was granted to the state have also been abrogated. And while the people all over the country and world are conflicted over deciding whether to celebrate this ruling or fight it for the way it was brought down, Nobel Peace prize winner Malala, has taken a stand in the situation, and the internet does not seem to agree with her.

In a detailed post on Twitter, the 22-year-old activist shared her views and concerns over the conflicted state that Kashmir has been since the time her ‘grandparents were young’. She wrote, “The people of Kashmir have lived in conflict since I was a child, since my mother and father were children, since my grandparents were young.”

She further wrote, “I am worried about the safety of the Kashmiri children and women, the most vulnerable to violence and the most likely to suffer losses in conflict.” And her worry did not sit right with many angry netizens, who dissected her tweet, to remind her of all the issues in Pakistan that may be in need of her immediate attention, as opposed to Kashmir.

In the post, she continues to talk about how there isn’t a need for anyone to suffer. She says, “There is no need for us to continue to suffer and hurt each other. I hope all South Asians, the international community and concerned authorities respond to their suffering. Whatever disagreements we may have, we must always defend human rights, prioritise the safety of children and women and focus on peacefully resolving the seven-decade-old conflict in Kashmir.”

And all the while Malala talks about prioritising the safety of Kashmiri children and women, the internet reminds her of prioritising her own country before she comes at India. Jammu and Kashmir is perhaps in its most vulnerable state right now, as is the entire nation, and in that state of turmoil, Malala’s tweet hit the people like a preachy sermon she would do well to practise herself.

Maybe she should have held off on saying anything at all. Save this for a less conflicted time.
