Chhattisgarh Women’s Commission Chairperson Says Women Often File Complaints Of Rape After Coming Out Of Consensual Relationships.
After several years, or even decades of raising our voices as women, making efforts to stand shoulder to shoulder with men and attempting to smash the patriarchy that has always held us women back, we believe we are finally in a position where our words account for something and is taken seriously. And perhaps it is because of that reason, now that we have a voice that is being heard, we also need to be careful of what we endorse with it, lest we say something deeply stupid and run the risk of influencing people the wrong way. In general, it is a good idea to think before you speak. A lesson Chhattisgarh Chairperson of women commission, Kiran Mayee Nayak, entirely missed or slept through.
Appealing once again to girls, because why should men be addressed in an issue like this anyway, she talked about how it so happens that women often file rape complaints after being in consensual physical relationships. She said, “In most of the cases, girls have a consensual relationship, stay in a live-in setup and then file an FIR [First Information Report] for rape [after separation].”
She went on to say, “I would request everyone to consider their relationship, their status…when you pursue such relationships, the outcome is always bad.”
We don’t know where Kiran Nayak gets her data or her orthodoxy from, but both are extremely outdated and should be done away with immediately.

Going on to warn women against falling for a filmy kind of a love, Kiran Nayak commented, “My appeal is that if you are a minor, then do not fall into the trap of filmy romance. Your family, friends and your entire life can get destroyed. These days, there is a new trend that people prefer to get married off at the age of 18. After a few years, when the couple has kids, they both find it difficult to survive.”
She may want to highlight the evils of using a law against the sentiment it was created for but wiht her broad, generalized statements, this comment and all of her other ones are deeply problematic. Especially since, her bold claim at the reason why women file for rape is unreasonable and downright silly.
Harshita Pandey, BJP worker and former chairperson with whom Kiran’s statement did not sit right, said, “This is highly objectionable and irresponsible statement which is anti-women in nature. Is this women commission or anti-women in nature. Doesn’t she know that women are conned or misled based on false information given by men?”
