Women In Kullu Carried A Woman In Labour On A Palanquin For 18 Kms To Get Basic Healthcare. And We Spend Our Money On Making Walls For Trump’s Visit

We all know the spiel. When it’s the question of vote bank, when the elections are right around the corner, politicians will promise us the world and its wife. We will give you water, electricity, anything you need. We will sort you out, they say. And then, the minute the party wins, the ‘minister’ who had promised he would work for his constituency is not to be seen anywhere. And everything he or she promised becomes just that, a promise.

This is exactly what happened in Kullu. On Sunday, Sunita Devi, a 27-year-old, felt the first contractions come on and she knew she was in labour. At that time, the men of the village had already left for work and in the her village, the mobile connectivity is absolutely horrible which means phones do not work. And with no roads, there was no way for Sunita to get access even to basic healthcare.

So the women of the village got together, put Sunita on a palanquin and carried her for 18 kilometres to the community health centre. And if you think this is amazing but also very worrying because everyone should have access to healthcare, then listen to this. The locals say that these sort of incidents take place every month.

These woman carried Sunita for 7 hours. They left at about 8:45 and got to Sainj only by 3:30 in the afternoon. Despite their ordeals and the hazardous trek, local residents say next to nothing is being done to improve the conditions of the road. Or even provide them with a road.

It’s a tricky terrain, prone to landslides and avalanches. Villagers are constantly putting their lives at risk as they traverse these areas. However, their requests to make it safer by providing them with roads have fallen on deaf ears. People in authority claim this is because it’s in the Great Himalayan National Park.

On the other hand, Donald Trump is visiting India and in Ahmedabad, 4-feet high walls are being built to hide the slums from view. You know, because why should poverty and reality distract from what should be a wonderful visit. And yet, we can provide basic amenities to our citizens. Should make you think.
