Why Are Women Judged If They Wear Sexy Clothes? Let’s Talk A Tit Bit About it.

By  |

Let’s face it, Indian society is a little messed up when it comes to girls. If they had it their way, we would all be a completely different version of ourselves. Miss goody two shoes, plaited hair, always dressed in a salwar suit that covers every inch of our bodies. It is important, right? Because you can judge a girl’s character by the way she dresses and what does a girl have if not her character? You know, to aunties who believe that I just want to say- get over it.

We have all been put into boxes for the way we dress. If we are wearing shorts and a T-shirt, we are called bold, if we are wearing jeans, we are called too modern (whatever that means) and if we are wearing a dress then we are classified as sluts.

Correct me if I am wrong but that is how the Indian society views girls. Actually, I feel like they enjoy nagging and bitching about us. If the way I dress gives them some entertainment in their otherwise very boring life, then I will gladly continue to do so. It’s always, “OMG did you see what her daughter was wearing?” or “her dress length is so short, who will marry her?”.

I was very lucky though, my parents never stopped me from wearing anything short or revealing. I mean, I have friends who aren’t allowed to leave their house in a skirt because their parents think it will give a wrong impression to men and to society, who ideally, they should have fucks to give about but they do. It’s almost as the length of our skirts define our worth and I refuse to comply with that mindset.

Indian society has always been extremely judgmental about women. They have a problem with what we do, what we wear, how we sit, how we talk, how we walk and whether are skirts cover our legs. I have wanted to tell them so many times that instead of worrying about what your girls are wearing, why not teach your boys not to stare and pass lewd comments?

That is another problem we have. Just the other day, I was on my way to work. I remember I was wearing a skirt and a top and some man in passing just whistled at me and said nice legs. What is sadder than that happening in the middle of the street is that I was not surprised it happened. Women go through this on a daily basis. Men will be staring at their boobs while speaking to them or trying to grope our ass because if she can wear such a sexy outfit, she must be asking for it, right? Nope, you couldn’t more wrong.

But this problem with women wearing too sexy or revealing clothes has been a thing for a while now. So in an attempt to do away with this stigma, we spoke to a few women about the kind of judgments and behaviour they have been subjected to just because they decided to wear something that was short or could be considered revealing.

Listen to the podcast here

One person said that it all about your outfit looking tasteful and as long as you can pull it off, why not? Another person said she loved wearing plunging necklines and short skirts and she believes in the old saying “if you have it, flaunt it”. A third person said that she doesn’t mind the judgment because she only dresses for herself and no one else.

Through the podcast, we cover a lot of topics like why women are stereotyped and whether women dress up mainly to impress men or themselves. Do tune into the TitBit’s podcast and you will realize that it is all about being confident and unfazed. Besides, I think it is high time we change this mindset of people and make them understand a woman can wear what she wants. So, the next time an aunty bothers you or a man is staring at you, make sure you flip them off with a smile.

And remember, no matter what they say, your character or dignity is not measured by the length of your skirt.
