Vogue Arabia Smashed Stereotypes About Hijabs, Muslim Women And More With Their April Issue

Sometimes I let my mind wander to think about how it would be to live in a perfect world. A world, where there would equality between men and women, where girls won’t be treated with disappointment on their birth and the word discrimination would have neither a meaning nor existence. You know, the average feminist dream that puts every other guy off.

But seems like we are not alone in dreaming about suppressing such discrimination and breaking the stereotypes. The world is reciprocating our need for change and Vogue Arabia is one such force driving that change. In a first, Vogue Arabia featured three black Hijabi models on the cover of their April Issue. The three were styled by Katie Trotter, the fashion Director at Vogue Arabia and shared how their entire focus of doing this was to shatter the stereotypes associated with modest fashion and Muslim women.

The need for more representation of mainstream fashion in media is imminent and ever-growing. An industry, where being in the limelight is important but being relevant more so, this was a bold but much required move.

Halima Aden, one of the models from the cover who had been featured on the cover for Vogue Arabia, once before in 2017, shared how “To think that just three years ago there was not a single Hijabi model and now fast-forward to the first Vogue Hijabi group cover.”

Adan, was also the first hijabi to walk at Milan Fashion Week last year and is clearly continuing with her streak. In a conversation about the cover, she also talked about how, “Most people are afraid to ask questions and have a conversation about it, even if they are genuinely curious. All they know about Muslim people stems from the news or videos on the Internet about women not having the same rights as men.”

The initiative by Vogue is being appreciated worldwide, and rightly so. Their April issue also talks about highlights other brave women such as US congresswoman Ilhan Omar, athletes Ibtihaj Muhammad and Zahra Lari, and CEO Ghizlan Guenez – all women who have contributed in bringing about a positive change in the world.
