Under Lockdown, This Australian Family Recreated A 15-Hour Flight To Europe In Their Living Room. Apparently, They Got Cheeseburgers In Flight!

Planning a vacation is very paradoxical, in a way that it is as tedious as it is exciting. Picking a destination to booking flights to making an itinerary to getting there, it’s one of the most thrilling things to do. I would give anything to be planning and executing a vacation right now, even it is only to my office, at this point. But, that’s not possible for a bit, at least.

I did have a vacation to Europe in the works, but coronavirus rained all over that parade, didn’t it? I just thank my stars every day that we didn’t go through with the bookings. But there are families and friends everywhere who have had to cancel vacations, and some have even had to cut trips short. People have spent lakhs getting last minute flights back home. The pandemic wasn’t going to ask anyone whether it was inconveniencing our plans or not, before it decided to overturn our whole lives, but it’s still very sad when you have to cancel a vacation you have spent so much energy and money on.

However, this Australian family did not let the coronavirus stop them from going on their dream vacation. Now, before you’ll get the wrong idea, I would just like to clear up that they didn’t go for the vacation. They did the next best thing.

The Russell family staged a 15-hour flight from Sydney to Munich. They did a full simulation in their living room from pretending to check-in at the airport to having special custom-made boarding passes. How cool is this? They did all this since coronavirus disrupted the Europe vacation that they had been planning for five years.

Kristy Russell said that her husband Nathan came up with this whole idea and executed the plan. Their imitation flight was complete with security checks, in-flight attendants and even airline meals. She told a publication that this started as a simple joke, but it has been a lot of fun and even their children are into it.

The family packed their luggage on Wednesday and boarded their pretend 15-hour flight with a layover in Doha. During the trip, their 16-year-old son performed the security check and screened their bags for objects you aren’t typically allowed on a flight and Nathan served the in-flight meals that consisted of a cheeseburger. They named their fictional airline Lounge Chair Air (love the name!) and asked the family members to board from Gate no 1 with their boarding passes.

How amazing is this idea? If I tell my parents I want to do something like this, they will laugh in my face. The Russell family  had planned a multi-week trip all around Europe. They had planned to visit France, Italy, a Mediterranean cruise and five weeks in the UK. Doesn’t that sound like an awesome vacation? I would be so bummed right now, but they found a way to make it such a fun experience.

If you thought that they were only going to pretend to fly to Munich, you would be wrong. Once they “land” they are going to continue to pretend like they are in Europe. They will be having Europe-themed meals and taking virtual tours of places like the Louvre.

Reading about this family made me smile. They went the extra mile to ensure that their kids didn’t miss out on the wonders of Europe and it’s a great way of keeping morale up during these tough times.

I wish my parents would let participate in an activity like this one, the most we have done together this lockdown is watch a bunch of movies.
