Unable To Conceive, Delhi Woman Murders Her Neighbour’s Son On Advice Of Occulist

Having lived in India all my life, I am no stranger to the patriarchal oppression that women are subjected to here. Most women, by the time they are in their mid-20s, are forced to marry a man chosen by their families. Then comes the immense pressure that is put on the woman to bear children. And by any chance, if she isn’t able to, she’s blamed, shamed and, more often than not, subjected to violence. I always believe that this mentality prevails because of the lack of education in our country. Nevertheless, this inane pressure put on women does not condone murder. You see, a woman in Delhi who was unable to conceive a child murdered her neighbour’s 3-year-old on the advice of an occultist. It’s unbelievable that despite all the awareness about its dangers, people are still subscribing to blind faith. How did this woman not realise that killing someone’s child is not going to help her conceive?

25-year-old Neelam Gupta was under immense pressure from her inlaws to have a child. She and her husband had been trying to conceive for a long time but to no avail. Neelam told the police that her inlaws and relatives would taunt her constantly and that made her approach an occultist. It was the occultist who suggested that Neelam sacrifice a child to appease the Gods. I don’t understand. Why go to an occultist instead of a doctor? A lot of you will argue that this is all mainly because the level of education in most parts of our country is negligible but you don’t need a Masters Degree to know that human sacrifice is not the answer to any problem.

After being advised to sacrifice a child in order to conceive, Neelam murdered her neighbour’s three-year-old son when he was playing all by himself. She then stuffed his body in a plastic bag and dumped it on the roof of a building in northwest Delhi’s Rohini. This matter came to light when the boy’s parents approached the police when they couldn’t locate him. The police launched a search to trace the child.

During the investigation, a staff member noticed a bag on the roof of the adjacent house. When it was opened, the boy’s body, with injury marks on his neck, was found. A senior police officer said that the prima facie observation was that he was strangled. The murder was registered and the police found out that the boy was last seen with Neelam. When they questioned her, she initially tried to mislead them. But later confessed to killed the boy while he was playing on the roof.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Pranav Tayal said, “During interrogation, the woman said she was under a lot of pressure to conceive and was taunted by her in-laws and society. So, she approached an occultist in Hardoi four years back who suggested her to sacrifice a child if she wanted to conceive.” Further adding, “In sheer desperation to have a child of her own, she decided to kill her neighbour’s son to make the almighty happy. As per the plan, on Saturday, when she found the child playing alone on the roof of the building, she went and killed him.”

Neelam’s desperation to have a child is understandable. A lot of women are put in that position by their inlaws and relatives and conditioning. Unfortunately, that’s how our patriarchal society works. But murdering that boy to appease God’s just makes no sense. There are a million other ways. Till when are we going to let occultists, blind faith and superstitions control our actions? How thick-headed do you have to be to not see that human sacrifice is never the solution? No matter who says what.
