“Twisted My Violent Sexual Assault Story For Her Own Use” Claims Amber Heard’s Ex-Assistant, As She Testified In Favour Of Johnny Depp. This Story Is Twisted.

A lot has been written about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s tumultuous marriage, divorce, domestic abuse allegations and Depp’s libel suit against a newspaper that is currently ongoing. Both sides have found their own band of supporters online. The Pirates of The Caribbean actor’s former partners Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis have claimed that Depp was never violent with them. However, things took a turn for the shocking when Amber Heard’s former personal assistant Kate James testified in court on Wednesday that she had confided in the actress a story of her own sexual assault from years ago, which she says Heard twisted into her own allegations against Depp.

According to the transcript of the High Court proceedings in London, which was being live tweeted verbatim by journalist Nick Wallis, James’ testimony was quite an unexpected turn of events. The ongoing trial is a libel suit that Johnny Depp has filed against New Group Newspapers (NGN), which publishes The Sun, and its executive editor Dan Wootton. In an April 2018 article published by The Sun, Depp was called ‘wife-beater’.

James, who worked as Amber Heard’s assistant from 2012 to 2015, gave her testimony via a video link from Los Angeles. She spoke about how she would often walk in to see Heard had had lots of wine to drink all night. She’d see the empty bottles but also have “incoherent, abusive text messages” on her phone that Heard had sent her, inebriated, in the middle of the night.

Kate James was asked by NGN’s lawyer if she was influenced by Johnny Depp and his associates into saying the things she did about Amber Heard. And that’s when James spoke about how, as a sexual violence survivor herself, she wanted to take the stand and do her part. She said that she was shocked when she found out how Heard had taken James’ own sexual assault story—of being raped at machete-point in Brazil 26 years ago—and twisted it for her own use.

“She referred directly to a violent rape that occurred to me 26 years ago and she twisted it into her own story and she used it for her own use. I am a sexual violence survivor and that’s very, very serious to take that stance if you are not one.”

[These are just some relevant tweets from Wallis’ thread of the entire testimony.]

Amber Heard will also be testifying in this case, sometime later this week. Although her testimony is to be heard in private. As for the proceedings of Depp’s defamation suit against Heard herself, it is slated to begin in August.

Johnny Depp, on the other hand, has denied all the allegations of abuse levelled against him by Heard in an op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018. In return, Depp slapped a $50 million lawsuit against her, because he believes her op-ed might’ve been the reason that Disney dropped him as Captain Jack Sparrow from The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. In fact, according to some leaked audio tapes from 2015 obtained exclusively by Daily Mail, the Aquaman actress could be heard warning Depp of her violent behaviour. In February, Heard reportedly admitted to hitting Depp at that time.

Depp has recently joined Instagram and has been posting videos of his music and artistic collaborations. If you peep into the comments, you’ll see that there’s been burgeoning support for the actor, especially after the audio tapes surfaced.

As a woman, I cannot fathom what Kate James must’ve gone through to find out that her former boss took something so personal and devastating to her and used it as a ploy to garner sympathy. If what James claims is true, it is a truly sickening thing to do to another woman. Her testimony now leaves a gaping question as to how things will proceed further. We’ll be keeping a sharp eye.
