Turkey To Introduce A “Marry Your Rapist” Bill For It’s Women In Case Of Statutory Rape. That Is Just Inhumane And Messed Up.

Trauma, they say, lives in your body. It stays in your bones, in your skin, in your scars and like waves, comes back and hits you when you least expect it to. Trauma, as they also say, changes you. And I know this, because I speak from my personal experience, and as does almost every other woman in this world, who at some point or the other has been subjected to some form of sexual misconduct and injustice. And just for the record, it hasn’t been easy living with it. Every little detail, smallest association and sometimes even the mere mention of it takes you back to the moment, and being a victim to such assault is the last thing you want to be reminded of. But seems like there are people and even governments at that, who don’t quite agree and would rather have the victim spend the rest of their life with the very person who attempted to destroy it.

Yes, you read that right. Turkey is all set to introduce a ‘marry your rapist’ bill for its people by the end of January and honestly we don’t even know where to begin with our opinion on it. Set on the grounds of protecting the ‘honor’ of the families involved (mind you, not the victim but the families), Turkish government wants to pass a law that will force a woman to marry her rapist in case of statutory rape.

The controversial bill in question here, is being opposed by a number of organisations and ignited a country wide movement among the women’s rights campaigners. They are strongly voicing their dissent over such a bill that legalises sexual crimes against women. In fact, back in 2016, a similar bill had been proposed by the government, but with the strong opposition from the public, never went through. That was of course, up until now, when it has again come into play and reeks of nothing but bad news.

If such a law is passed, it will facilitate violation of women’s rights further and as collateral damage, endorse pedophilia, all under the pretext of saving the families from societal shame. Statutory or not, rape is rape and whether it was done by means of violence or by manipulation and gaslighting the victim, no woman deserves that and worse, living with their perpetrator for life. It feels like a life imprisonment for the victim, instead of punishing the criminal. Even the United Nations has expressed their discomfort over the bill by saying that it could lead to the increased confidence in rapists without the fear of punishment and consequences to their crimes. And boy do we agree.

Even the thought of imagining of marrying the man who sexually exploited you sends shivers down your spine, let alone having to spend the rest of your life with him. And no matter how much the government endorses the fact that with this they only mean to pardon men who have had sex “without force or threat”; they need to understand that the abuse in rape is not just physical but also emotional and mental. Which is why, to even expect for a rape survivor to be tied down with her perpetrator will only embolden the crime here and take care of it.

A campaigner also made a statement as she expressed, “I applaud the brave work of women’s rights campaigners in Turkey who are taking a stand against this discriminatory bill and pushing back again regressive forces that are seeking to remove current legal protections for girls.” We hope the feminists and women organisations fighting against this bill, hold their ground and are able to repeat history by not letting this get through. Because clearly, it is time us women stick together and fight like one, for there is no chance in hell, we are going to be okay with legalising rape.
