Tirath Singh Rawat’s Wife Comes To His Defence Post His Ripped Jeans Remark. Says Women Should ‘Save Our Culture’

As a woman living in a country that is knee deep in misogynistic views and gender biased norms, I am almost always on board to be part of a movement that furthers the cause and concerns of us women. Whether it is rallying against the rising crime stats, or demanding laws that protect us from getting exploited, I am constantly on the look out to contribute to a cause one way or the other. Little did I know, I could do it simply by sporting my pair of favourite ripped jeans this time around, after the hashtag #RippedJeansTwitter started trending  post Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat’s very questionable statements.

Inviting the wrath of irate women everywhere, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand’s sexist and offensive statement about women who wear ripped jeans, and how they lacked values by sporting clothes didn’t go down well and rightfully so. Going on to describe the attire of a woman who once sat next to Rawat in a flight, wearing boots, jeans ripped at the knees and bangles in hand with two kids with her, Rawat went as far as questioning what values such a woman would to impart to her kids.

Because apparently, morals and values come with your jeans and might slip out of a rip in the jeans.

And while there is only so much that could be taken away from Rawat’s pretty obvious statement, his wife Rashmi Singh Rawat came to his defence with an argument that was equally flawed as the one her husband made. Fighting back the heavy trolling on social media and the ire of party members who called Rawat’s words ‘shameful’, Rashmi said that her husband’s words were blown out of proportion.

“He (Tirath Singh Rawat) said that women’s participation is unprecedented in building the society and the country. It is the responsibility of the women of our country to save our cultural heritage, save our identity, save our costumes,” said Rashmi, once again putting the onus and pressure of saving Indian culture on the shoulders of women, giving a free hand to men and their responsibility towards any of it.

The fact that both husband and wife, only questioned and beseeched women to protect Indian heritage and costumes, without urging men to drape themselves in a kurta pyjama instead of shorts or torn jeans, was yet again reflective of the sexist values that the leaders of our country uphold and promote.

The very idea of electing leaders to run our government is to ensure a better and a progressive future. However, when people like Tirath Singh Rawat, digress from their duty of policing a state to policing a woman’s personal wardrobe being overly concerned with ripped jeans, things are bound to get messy.

For the last time, women have the right to dress however they want, without being questioned on their competence as mothers, or otherwise. What we put on our back is our choice, and it is about time people stop stereotyping women on the basis of the clothes we choose to wear. As far as protecting the Indian culture is concerned, it sure as hell doesn’t start or end at a pair of distressed denims.
