Three Women Were Brutally Assaulted In UP Because They Were Suspected Of Being Witches. WTF Is Going On?
I have always never really understood Indian society and that is surprising considering not only did I study sociology; I taught the subject. Even today there are aspects of the Indian society that leave me completely baffled and dumbfounded. Like their staunch and blind faith in superstitions and hearsay, it blows my mind sometimes and not in a good way.
Do I find superstitions extremely fascinating? Of course. But not cutting your nails after sunset because your grandmother told you not to is not the same thing as completely ostracizing a woman because she is a widow (FYI, this still happens). And it certainly is not the same thing as deeming women as witches and assaulting them in public (last time I checked, we aren’t living in the 1600s in Salem.) Every time it feels like we are moving forward towards progress, some ridiculous incident like this happens and we are shoved two steps back.
Okay, allow me to make this shocking incident a little clearer for you. Three women Bihar’s Muzaffarpur were allegedly beaten up and paraded around half-naked because the people of Dakrama village, where this incident took place, believed them to be witches. Don’t ask me why because I have no idea what twisted superstition this was based on.

This incident took place on 4th May and its video was spread like wildfire all over social media. The actions of the locals against these women just get worse. After they were beaten and paraded all over the village, they were tonsured by the mob and reports say they were even made to consume their faeces.
For the life of me, I can’t figure out why the local people of this village would treat these women this way. Was it not enough that the cases of domestic violence are on an all-time high right now that we had to add witches to the mix too?
Not to mention that all those people completely flouted the lockdown that has been put in place to save us from coronavirus. But I guess witch-shaming women is more important than fighting the virus that has infected 46,000 people and claimed over 1,000 deaths in our country. Uttar Pradesh itself has over 2,000 cases. That’s how India rolls I guess, superstitions trump everything and history is proof of that.

India is so plagued by superstitions that have no head or tail that sometimes people forget there are larger forces at play (in this case coronavirus). Besides, assaulting women because they are suspected of being witches? Seriously? Did no one see the sheer stupidity in that? I still don’t understand what their end game was.
Though the police are investigating, no one has been charged with anything as yet. I hope all those people who did this to those three women are thrown in jail.
