Three Women Activists From Kerala Thrashed A Vlogger For Uploading An Anti-Feminist Video. This Is Not Feminism

I am always told that I have a terribly short temper. And among all the other things that I am constantly told about myself, this one is rather true. From something as small as someone cutting me in front of a line, to as big as someone misbehaving with me, it takes very little to rile me up and for my claws to come out. And while being that quick tempered has its own pros and cons, there is a subtle line between being irritable and unreasonable. A line, that three women from Kerala recently crossed, as they thrashed a YouTube vlogger Vijay P Nair after he uploaded an anti-feminist video.

Feminists are, by nature, often identified as people who don’t just strongly believe in the concept of equality, but are also strong-headed in turning that into a reality. And often they are mistaken for women who hate men. Something that is not true. That is misandry and we don’t stand for it. But beating a man black and blue into submission is no way to protest an anti-feminist video also.

The incident took place a few hours after vlogger Vijay P Nair dropped a video insulting women’s rights activists and feminists. Three women identified as veteran dubbing artist Bhagyalakshmi and activists Sreelekshmi Arackal and Diya Sana were arrested by the police on charges under IPC Sections 452 (house trespass), 323 (causing hurt), 392 (robbery), 294 (b) (using abusive language) and 506 (criminal intimidation) upon the complaint of the vlogger, who was thrashed and threatened by these women.

Turns out, the women had already filed a case against Nair, earlier that day on Saturday, one with Thampanoor police and the opposite with Museum police. The case with Museum police was based on a grievance issued by Sreelekshmi earlier t for the offensive video Vijay posted on his YouTube channel. The second complaint was for outraging the modesty of ladies.

The women who then showed up at his house, questioned him for his offensive remarks, also thrashed him, making his apologise for his words. They even seized his laptop computer and cell phone and handed them over to police, during which Nair didn’t want to lodge  any complaint whatsoever. At some point, he mentioned that he deserved this because of his anti-feminist videos. But Nair changed his mind as quickly as he changed his statement on Saturday night and decided to go ahead with an FIR after all.

As if out of a movie scene, where people often take the law in their own hands, no matter how enraging his video and his stance was towards women is, nothing gives us, even the women, a right to disregard someone’s personal space and the right to express their opinion. Even if there was an anti-feminist video in the mix. And that goes both ways for men and women. Women assaulting, manhandling men is never going to be the solution. And so we don’t take away from us the cause or dilute it with our own mistakes, it is important to be a little more tolerant, smart and within the boundaries of law.
