This Woman Shoplifted Merchandise Worth 3.8 Million Over A Span Of 19 Years And Sold It All On eBay. Wait, What?

Let’s face it, as much as we all get weak in the knees at the sound of some mushy romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, nothing quite compares to the thrill that comes with watching adrenalin pumping crime thrillers with long drawn heists, car chases and a nail-biting climax. There is just something about the way an elaborate scam follows through in a movie, that gets you going. However, when that onscreen crime drama translates itself into reality, that is when shit gets too hot to handle. As we saw happening with a Texas woman named, Kim Richardson, who as of yesterday has been charged with a notorious film-like crime of stealing millions of dollars in merchandise and selling it on eBay. Now that’s a plot we’d love to see in a movie.

The 63-year-old woman recognised as Kim Richardson has been sentenced to 54 months (4.5 years) in a federal prison after she was brought in by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as the Secret Service, after she got caught of shoplifting merchandise worth 3.8 million dollars (22 crores approx). After all, if a crime like this wouldn’t summon the secret service, we don’t know what will.

Pulling off scams since she was in her 40s, Kim Richardson reportedly used to shoplift merchandise during her travels and then use both government and private courier services like United States mail (USPS), Federal Express (FedEx) and United Parcel Service (UPS) to resell them on eBay. With the help of special shoplifting tools which would allow her to disable electronic tags from clothes and goods, she would dump all of her stolen items in a black bag and then walk out, not getting caught by the metal detector. Of course, she would then elaborately put them on Ebay and make a good buck out of it.

She would then package these items herself, sell them off on eBay who didn’t know they were buying stolen items from Kim. A neat trick that she managed to pull off for almost 19 years, until last year in 2019, when her crimes finally caught up with her. And while we appreciate the elaborate thought and planning that went behind in this con, we can’t help but admit how this was too crazy and she was way in over her head in this one.

Pleading guilty to the court of running a conspiracy from August 2000 till April 2019, Kim in addition to serving her time, has also agreed to pay a restitution of  $3.8 million. Meanwhile, the court has observed that it is “virtually impossible” to identify all of her victims in this 19-year-long scam.  While we had all heard of kleptomaniacs, only seldom do you ever come across someone who also turns their bad habit into a grossly profitable business. Guess this time, she is the one who got lifted!
