This Woman From Delhi Demanded This Insane Compensation Amount For Getting A Non-Veg Pizza Which ‘Wounded Her Soul’

I come from a staunch Jain family. Thankfully, my parents don’t subscribe to most of the rules of the religion. We eat bread, vegetables that grow underground (what is life without potatoes?!) and don’t fast all the time. However, the one rule my mother has enforced and drilled into our heads is the no non-veg rule. Although that’s more of a personal choice. This is why, when I read about this woman from Delhi who is now seeking compensation of 1 crore rupees for being delivered a non-veg pizza instead of her vegetarian order, I understand where she was coming from. But no one can deny, it was a bit of an over-reaction. Okay, it was downright melodramatic.

Deepali Tyagi approached the consumer court after she alleged that an American pizza chain outlet delivered a non-vegetarian pizza to her. She is seeking compensation for one crore rupees. In her petition, Deepali said that this mistake had spoiled her religious beliefs, wounded her soul and left her traumatized for life. Erm.. am I the only one who thinks this is a tad funny?

She said in her petition that she was a pure vegetarian because, “religious beliefs, teachings, family traditions, own conscience, and her best choice”.

It all started on 21 March 2019. Deepali had placed an order for a vegetarian pizza. She said that it was Holi that day and her children were hungry after celebrating the festival. The pizza was delivered later than the proposed time but Deepali didn’t think too much of it. However, when she took a bite of her pizza, she realised that there were pieces of meat instead of mushrooms. Her lawyer, Farhat Warsi, told the consumer court that Deepali immediately called customer care and raised a complaint about their negligence.

A few days later, the district manager of the pizza outlet called Deepali and offered to serve free pizzas to her entire family at the outlet. But Deepali wasn’t satisfied with that offer. She said that the matter wasn’t so simple as she is a pure vegetarian and by eating the non-veg pizza, her religious practices have been spoiled. The ordeal had given her permanent mental agony and would have to go through “several long and expensive rituals” which will cost her lakhs of rupees.

To this, the district manager said that he wasn’t authorized to discuss terms of money and he would pass the matter to the pizza chain’s legal team. In her petition, Deepali said that the manner with which the pizza chain responded was extremely casual. She said it was an insult to her social and financial status.

The petition read, “That the opposite party’s negligent manner of performance has contaminated complainant body with food mixed with animal meat that was acquired by killing and cutting short the life given by God to any animal. In her religious belief killing any animal and eating its meat is a “paap” (sin). The opposite party has a deceitfully involved complainant in that sin of eating animal meat. They have wounded her soul giving her mental agony for her whole life. They have ravaged her religious belief.”

Deepali has asked the consumer court to direct the pizza chain to compensate her with Rs 1 crore. She also wants the pizza outlet to pay compensation for all the mental agony and financial stress this has caused her. A future hearing has been scheduled.

As I said before, I understand that for someone who eats only vegetarian food, especially for religious reasons, something like this would be a groundbreaking mistake. But asking for compensation for Rs 1 crore is a little OTT. But hey, to each their own, right?
