This Man Refused To Offer His Seat In A Bus To A Pregnant Woman. Reddit Didn’t Sympathise With Him

Do you know how people say they can mindlessly scroll through Instagram Twitter for hours together without realising it? I have never understood that. In fact, I think someone needs to introduce these people to Reddit. People post the most interesting and bizarre stories of their lives on that platform making it the most entertaining social media site. However, every now and then I come across an anecdote from someone’s life that really infuriates me. Like this douche, for instance, who proudly announced on Reddit that he once refused to give up his seat in a bus to a pregnant lady because he had sore feet and getting pregnant was her personal choice. Seriously, what is wrong with men? Did all of them fall on their head as children?

We are taught to be respectful and compassionate to all people. Especially to those who are elderly, pregnant of differently-abled. This means giving up our seats for them even if we have blisters on our feet from standing all day long. This man, whoever he is, thinks he stood his ground so he should be proud of himself. A modern-day Rosa Parks. In reality, all he did was make a pregnant woman suffer more than she already was. He should be ashamed of himself. This kind of arrogance never gets you anywhere.

This pregnant-woman hater took to Reddit to narrate this incident. He said that he refused to give his bus seat to a “heavily-pregnant woman” because his feet were sore from working all day. He said, “At my job, I’m literally on my feet all day, and I work 10-hour shifts. After a long day, my feet are sore…I have to walk another 15-20 minutes to my house from the bus stop. Which means more time on my feet.”

AITA for not giving up my seat to a pregnant woman?

One day, a pregnant woman gets onto his bus and seeing that there aren’t any seats available, starts hinting at this man to give up his seat and offer it to her. When he ignored and pretended he didn’t hear her, she asked him out loud to which he flatly refused. His reasoning was problematic, to say the least. According to him, he shouldn’t have to give up his seat as his legs were sore and the woman should not expect people to inconvenience themselves just because she is pregnant. Yikes. I don’t mean to sound like a typical Indian aunty, but who brought him up and why did they go so wrong?

He wrote, “I wasn’t rude or anything, I just told her no, I’ve had a long day and my feet are sore. I don’t want to give up my seat. She started crying about how she’s a pregnant single mom, and I told her I’m sorry, but that was her personal choice and she can’t expect other people to accommodate her life choices. We live in a state where birth control and abortions are free, so I don’t know why this should be my problem. It’s not my fault she decided to have a baby when she can’t afford a car.”

After he told her off, an old man offered his seat to the pregnant woman, but the other commuters in the bus started calling him names. This man, having the thickest skin of them all, ignored them. Once he got home, he narrated this incident to his sister who completely freaked. Obviously.

He wrote, “When I got home and told my sister, she flipped the fuck out and went crying to our parents, who also chewed my ass out. But I was tired and had a long day, and I don’t know why we need to keep perpetuating the idea that breeding somehow means your entitled to people’s seats. I’m tired, too, we’re all tired in this pandemic.”

After reading the whole thing, I am going to answer his question about whether he is the asshole in this situation or not- yes, he most certainly is. I don’t say this about a lot of people but this also makes him a bad person.

Do you see why I am so annoyed at this entire incident that went down? What this man failed to understand is that a pregnant woman is a thousand times more uncomfortable and in pain than he will ever be. So his argument of “even I am tired and my legs are sore” is nothing but him being a man-child throwing a tantrum and whining. Besides, instead of taking this entire thing on his ego and pride, he should’ve stopped to think that if he loses his balance while standing in a bus and slips, he gets away with a simple bruise, at the most. But if a pregnant woman, who is standing in a moving bus, slips, chances are that she loses her baby. Didn’t think of that, did he?

He should’ve just done the decent, courteous thing and given up his seat. His sore feet and long day are minuscule problems compared to what a pregnant lady goes through. Especially on a moving bus. But then again, how dare we expect a man to understand, right?

Redditors had some mixed reactions about this whole thing. While some agreed with him and said that the woman should’ve just asked someone else when he refused others schooled this man on empathy. A lot of users also commented saying that pregnant women are more prone to accidents due to a lack of balance.

Next time you see a pregnant lady on a bus or train, do me and yourself a favour and offer her your seat. It’s the decent and human thing to do.
