This Man Decided To Take His Wife’s Surname After Marriage To Keep Her Family Name Going. Where Do We Find Men Like These?

Marriage is a union of two people (preferably in love), who come together to start, what many call a new and most important chapter of their life. And to quite an extent, that is a true depiction. Except, what people generally don’t tell you that marriage in India is also synonymous with sacrifice, but only if you’re a woman. The wife has to give up her maternal house, her previous life and responsibilities, in some cases even pay dowry, and then at the last, give up her own surname to take that of the husband’s.

Some argue that the decision of taking your husband’s last name is a personal choice and hence, must not be used in argument against men. And while that may be true, societal pressure means that this is rarely a choice. However, seems like things are finally stirring up, for in a fresh piece of news, a man from San Francisco, Ryan Morrison has taken his wife’s last name – Miyoshi. He now uses the name ‘Ryan Miyoshi’.

Giving the patriarchs of the society a silent heart attack, this man has made one of the sweetest gesture of giving up his own last name, to be known by that of his wife, and mind you folks, proudly so. Sharing the ecstatic and cutesy news of twitter, Ryan wrote, “Hey y’all — I’m getting married tomorrow and taking my wife’s name. Had to make a rebrand joke, srry. See thread for why I’m taking her name.”

He continued writing, “Long story short, my grandpa was a priest, wasn’t allowed to get married, and had a secret family. As a way to help keep this all hidden, the kids were all given the last name Morrison — as the story goes — chosen by opening a phonebook and pointing at random.”

“On the other hand, my wife’s last name comes from her Japanese father, and can be traced back for hundreds and hundreds of years. Since my father-in-law doesn’t have siblings, and my wife only has a sister, there’s not a whole lot of people to carry on the Miyoshi name,” he wrote, calmly narrating the story.

He finally concluded by sharing, “I figured her name is the better choice out of the two, so why not! As of tomorrow afternoon, I will no longer be Ryan Morrison, and instead: Ryan Miyoshi.” And the fact that for him the entire idea of taking up his wife’s name had more to do with the heritage and less to do with his male ego and chauvinism, proved that self secure men are arguably the best of the lot. We’re sure the Missus would agree!

A news that came to us like a fresh breath of air, because it was cute as it was reassuring. It was enough to let everyone around know that these traditions need not be associated with gender,  Kudos to the Miyoshis, their approach to life is exactly what we need to improve ours!
