This Madhya Pradesh Cop Was Caught Beating His Wife On Camera, Says She Should Have Complained Earlier If He Was Abusive

Back in 2014, a thread on Twitter talking about abuse in relationships started after a horrific incident of domestic violence surfaced online. Trending with the hashtag #WhyIStayed, the thread had women from everywhere chiming in their own experiences and reasons of why one would choose to stay in an abusive relationship. Some blamed their distorted faith in the ‘love conquers all’ philosophy, while others shared how it was fear of further getting hurt that made them stay. And while none is good enough a reason to stay, we believe it must’ve been either of the two that made this wife of a Madhya Pradesh cop stay in her marriage, even after he was caught beating her on camera.

In a video that has gone viral on social media and left most of us disturbed and a little more aware of the harsh reality of domestic violence, this Madhya Pradesh cop, Purushottam Sharma working as a Director General-rank officer was caught beating his wife black and blue and justifying it by calling it a ‘family dispute’. Because a family hitting each other senseless is normal.

Being shared on Twitter, the video starts with an argument breaking out between the couple and within seconds he can be seen pinning his wife to the floor, thrashing her guts out. Two other men can be spotted in the video, but neither was seen coming to the rescue. A dog can also be seen barking around the room at the sight of the assault, while the husband drunk with rage, continued to hit her and yell at her regardless.

Upon questioning, the Madhya Pradesh cop holding himself not accountable to the crime he could be clearly seen committing, said, “If my nature is abusive, then she should’ve complained earlier. This is a family dispute, not a crime. I am neither a violent person nor a criminal. It is unfortunate that I have to go through this. My wife stalks me and has put cameras in the house.”

He went on to share how the two had been married for over 32 years but it was only in 2008 when she first filed a complaint against him. But the point is, since 2008, she has been living in my house, enjoying all facilities and travelling abroad on my expenses,” shared the cop, clearly implying how him taking care of her expenses gave him the right to beat her senseless.

And that statement was a reflection of  the kind of entitlement men believe they have over their wives after bringing them to their house post marriage. Because in this society, women aren’t human beings, their mens’ property to use, abuse and exploit.

It has been reported that this horrific incident occurred after the wife tried to confront her abusive husband with his friend. As the matter made it to headlines, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “He has been relieved of his duties. If anyone who holds a responsible position is found to be indulging in illegal activities and taking laws into his hands, then action will be taken against them, irrespective of who they are.”

Nothing gives anyone the right to mistreat or raise a hand on anyone else, and we hope Purshottam Sharma is taken strict action against, to let people see what happens if they do. After all, women cannot always pay the price for mens’ sense of entitlement and inflated egos.
