This Couple From Karnataka Opted To Clean Up The Beach Instead Of Going On A Honeymoon. We Love Everything About This

A few years ago, Afroz Shah, a lawyer from Mumbai, spearheaded one of the largest beach clean-up drives in the world. He and his group of thousands of volunteers completely restored Versova beach, it was fabulous and much-needed. After it ended, I had hoped that people around the country would follow Afroz Shah’s lead and clean their local beaches, but that didn’t go down so well. It’s no secret that India has extremely filthy beaches. It’s almost as if people don’t understand the difference between a beach and a dumpster. Which is why, when I came across an article about a couple who forego their honeymoon and cleaned up a beach instead, it made me so happy.

It all started when, a week after their wedding, Anudeep Hegde and Minusha Kanchan were discussing where they should go for their honeymoon. They were spending time in Anudeep’s hometown in Karnataka and frequently went to Someshwara beach to spend time with each other.

Once, while they were on the beach, the couple was extremely annoyed at the fact that people would just throw garbage and litter. It had become a dumping ground with alcohol bottles, slippers and other waste items just scattered on the sand. So while the couple was still in the process of deciding the location for their honeymoon, Anudeep suggested they clean up the beach.

Once the couple agreed, they went to the store and bought all the basic equipment for a beach clean-up drive and then they got to it. Here comes the best part. Anudeep and Minusha say that between November 27 and December 5 they managed to clean up 600 kgs of waste from the beach. Who said two people alone couldn’t make a difference?

Anudeep said that he and his wife gave it their all and just kept cleaning. After a while, more than a dozen youngsters came down to the beach and began helping them. According to the couple, nearly 80% of the beach has been cleaned up and the rest will be done in a week.

The garbage that they collected has been taken away by the local panchayat workers. The couple aims to increase awareness about biological and marine conservation. Thus, they will continue with this cleaning drive.

This is just so awesome. We need more people like Anudeep and Minusha. They opted to clean up a beach instead of going on their honeymoon. Hopefully, their story will inspire others to do the same.

More power to this couple!
