This Chennai Couple Had Their Wedding Ceremony Underwater In Their Traditional Outfits. We Love Their Adventurous Spirit.

I have often thought long and hard about what I want my wedding to look like. Unlike most people, I want it to be as small and intimate as possible. Possibly on a beach somewhere. As much as I love to attend big fat Indian weddings, much to the dismay of my parents, I can’t picture myself sitting on a grand stage while people line up to greet me and my groom. I am no event planner but I believe that a person’s wedding must reflect on their personalities. Why aren’t offbeat weddings normalized? I think the bride and groom should be able to celebrate their love in a way that’s memorable to them. Like this couple from Chennai, for instance. They had a literal underwater wedding. How cool is this?

V Chinnadurai and S Swetha decided to get hitched 60 feet underwater off the coast of Neelankarai at the crack of dawn on February 1. Instead of the stars, fate or a pandit, it was the ocean currents that determined their wedding date. I love how they went completely off the beaten track with their wedding. Who would have thought getting married 60 feet underwater would actually be possible?

The groom, V Chinnadurai, who is a software engineer and a licenced scuba diver, told TOI, “It was a traditional marriage ceremony, only it was underwater. We dived in at an auspicious time in the morning and exchanged garlands and tied the thaali before 7.30 am as per instructions from our priest.”

Swetha, the bride, is also a software engineer. However, she started her scuba diving lessons merely a month ago to prepare for the wedding ceremony. She said, “I was nervous and so were my parents, but we had eight divers with us. It was exciting too because we’ve been trying to tie the knot since last week. It was all in the hands of the sea.”

The couple had wedding practice sessions wearing wet suits. However, on Monday, they dived into the water wearing traditional clothes. Swetha wore a koorai saree while Chinnaduari wore a veshti.

Their entire wedding depended on the ocean currents. As soon as the couple came out of the sea after their unique wedding ceremony, they were greeted by their family and friends.

I really love how adventurous this couple is. Having a wedding under the ocean is extremely offbeat but if you think about it, it’s the safest option in pandemic times!
