The World’s First Vagina Museum Opens Its Doors In London In November And We Hope It’s More Than Just Lip Service

‘This is a man’s world, this is a man’s world, But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl’ sang James Brown in 1960s, when he wrote this hit song talking about rampant patriarchy but also about how the world is nothing without women. And even though the world, since then, took its own sweet time to understand the underlying point James was trying to make, we think it’s finally come around to the idea of women holding power. And while we weren’t expecting this, it certainly is a surprise to see that a museum dedicated to our vaginas will come up in London.

This came about after a crowd funding campaign to raise about 50 thousand pounds. London will now be hosting the first of its kind Vagina Museum, that aims at celebrating that part of a woman’s body. The Museum is aimed at raising awareness about the gynaecological anatomy of a woman and open important dialogues around vaginal and vulval health. The marketing manager Zoe Williams issued a statement abut the news as he said, “As this is the world’s first bricks-and-mortar museum dedicated to vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy, we didn’t quite know what to expect in terms of interest, and were delighted with the £50,000 we raised.”

The museum is said to inaugurate on 14th November with an exhibition titled, “Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How to Fight Them” and will challenge all the myths that are around vaginal health and hygiene. And it only seems fair and important for this development to come around, after the world has ignored such critical dialogues for so long.  A museum dedicated to penises called the The Icelandic Phallological Museum was constructed back in 1997.

Furthermore, the museum’s mission statement also talks about furthering feminism and becoming a forum for “women’s rights, the LGBT+ community and the intersex community, challenging heteronormative and cis-normative behaviour and promoting intersectional, feminist and trans-inclusive values.” Williams also said how, “We want to give everyone the confidence to talk about a perfectly normal part of the anatomy.” This would also give women a chance to know more about their own body and help embrace this part to themselves.

Finally something conclusive and big happening to break the taboo and stigmas around the word ‘Vagina’, and establishing it as a body part as opposed to the other things it has been made to be – the place where family honour lies, a place of shame etc.. Because there is nothing wrong or embarrassing about vaginas and now the world can witness it.
