The Poster For Pati, Patni Aur Woh Is Out And As Usual, The Patni Is In A Saree And The Woh Is Sexy. Stereotypical Much?

Bollywood needs to be cancelled. The entire industry needs to be taken into a room and given a good talking down to. They should be told, in no uncertain terms, that this is not acceptable – this constant stereotyping – that with every decent movie we think we have risen above. It turns out to be untrue and we are back to square one. But we’ve been back at square one so many times, it’s starting to get very fucking annoying.

You would think that with better movies being made, the subject matters being tackled, it’s going to get better. Turns out, nope. It’s a joke. Nobody cares! Bollywood will continue to churn out rubbish in the name of entertainment.

The recent poster release of Pati, Patni Aur Woh is proof that the more things change, the more they remain the same.

Now, in case you’re still wondering where the above mentioned hilarity we talked about lies, the answer is in the fine print of stereotypes and hypocrisy. You see, the poster for this movie titled – Pati, Patni aur Woh, is going to be a story about a man, a wife and a mistress, is once again steeped in prejudice and stereotypes, as they show the Patni in a simple saree and the Woh in a sexy dress. Because how else are people going to look at it and just know, right?

And that is exactly what makes it something to laugh at. The fact that years into trying to break free such shackles of the society and moving past the prejudice they’ve set for women, especially the wives at that, we are still showing wives in old sarees, bindi on the forehead, while the mistress gets to look like she stepped out of a magazine cover.

On one hand, we talk about the need to open important dialogues, empower women, break glass ceilings and on the other, we have this billion dollar industry minting out content that is furthering the stereotypes we are fighting to get rid of. See, we don’t have a problem with Bhumi wearing what a saree. Heck, she can be a wife wearing whatever she wants. But we have a problem that the implication is that when other women wear “hotter” clothes, it’s the reason a husband might stray to having an affair. Because isn’t that the first thing that comes to people’s mind when they hear about an extra-marital affair? That the mistress would surely look like a bomb in comparison to the old hag they call a wife. Never once do we hear talking about what a sleaze the guy is. And why not, after all it is exactly what we’re being shown, again and again.

It is about time that Bollywood stops absolving themselves of the responsibility they have, considering that it influences the minds of so many at the simple disposal of a wifi. This is the twenty-first century and chances are that a wife in today’s day and age might give even fashion struck millennials a run for our money, when it comes to looks. So maybe, the makers should find a better visual representation for the movie, because clearly, this one is doing them no favours.

The movie that stars Kartik Aaryan, Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Pandey, is set to hit the theatres on 6th of December.
