The Nirbhaya Convicts Lawyer AP Singh’s Horrifying Statements Prove That We’re Never Safe With Such Men Around
Whenever I think about the future, getting married or having kids, I always tell myself I don’t want to raise my daughter in a country like India, not in its present state at least. And being from here, I understand how the statement might make me sound like an anti-nationalist, but when you have grown up in a place where as soon as a girl comes of age, or rather, grows up to make sense of certain concepts in life, you have to caution her about rape, way before anything else. Yes, people say that things are getting better, but when it takes almost 8 years to hang the convicted rapists of the gruesome and bone chilling Nirbhaya case, can we really be blamed for our disappointment?
More so because, in our country it isn’t just about the criminals anymore, it is about everyone protecting them and shielding them from the consequences they so deserve for their vile actions. Lawyer A P Singh, the person representing the Nirbhaya convicts is one such man. He, single-handedly made us lose all faith in humanity.
Responsible for delaying the execution of the 4 convicts, A P Singh has been playing with the loopholes in the law for far too long until this morning, when he ran out of all the tricks he had up his sleeve and saw his clients get hanged. But the thing is, despite the ruling having taken place and the execution having gone through, this case had come across as an eye-opener of what we’re dealing with here.

During the course of this case, we found out how it wasn’t just the convicts who had a sickening mentality but also their lawyer AP Singh, who has dropped some very rabid and prejudiced statements in these past 8 years. Saying things like, “If my daughter or sister engaged in any pre-marital activity and disgraced herself and allowed herself to lose face and character by doing such things, I would most certainly take this sort of sister or daughter to my farm house and, in front of my entire family, I would put petrol on her and set her alight,” Singh proved that only a man as sick as him could come to the fore to defend those monsters on the death row.
And he didn’t just stop there, Advocate AP Singh has laid out several of such cringe-worthy comments that made it hard for us to ever believe in humanity again. With a strategy to malign the victim instead, AP Singh had also said, “To stop rapes, ban celebrations like Valentine’s Day and ‘kiss of love’ campaigns. This is all blind imitation of the West and doesn’t at all suit the Indian culture. In their stead, festivals like Bhai Dooj, Raksha Bandhan and Mata Pita Ki Puja (an event to worship one’s mother and father) should be celebrated across the country on a grand scale to inculcate cultural values in today’s youth.”
He was also caught saying to the Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna after he sentenced the accused to death back in 2013 that, “You have not upheld truth, but lies? This decision has been taken under political pressure and for vote bank politics.”
The other lawyer of the case fighting alongside of him, ML Sharma was no better for he too had passed statements like, “In our society, we never allow our girls to come out from the house after 6:30 or 7:30 or 8:30 in the evening with any unknown person. You are talking about man and woman as friends. Sorry, that doesn’t have any place in our society. We have the best culture. In our culture, there is no place for a woman.”
Such were the men who were defending the Nirbhaya case convicts, forcing us to reevaluate whether it was just the 4 of them we needed saving from. From victim-blaming to victim-shaming, these guys stopped at nothing and while the hanging came as a small victory, we worry that we live in a nation where such assholes are given a mike and are allowed to speak. Such an injustice.
