The Gleeful Celebration Of Rhea Chakraborty’s Arrest Shows How We Have Messed Up Priorities
I can bet a pretty penny you were reading about Rhea Chakraborty’s arrest when you came across this article. And you are probably baying for my blood. If it was allowed, we know that a huge chunk of our population would be out on the streets celebrating the arrest of Rhea Chakraborty. Apparently, this is some kind of win for the keyboard warriors. People who have been consistently posting updates about the case, all of their knowledge acquired from a single source. I don’t want to make it obvious but this is a channel that runs essentially on one person’s screaming matches.
Now, armed with just lots of passion for a person they didn’t support when he was alive, because this guy wasn’t an A lister, these people are clapping, shouting and celebrating the arrest of a woman. And not just that, there is some sort of absolutely horrifying mockery of her words when she saw SSR’s body. She said ‘Sorry babu’ which could have meant anything but right now, it’s a chant being used to make fun of her. It’s the most gut-wrenching, goosebump-inducing thing that is trending right now.
And this…this is at a point when we are gunning to be one of the worse hit countries in this pandemic. But fuck that. Fuck that our numbers are sky rocketing, let’s chuckle gleefully as she stumbles. And though most people won’t want to look, allow me to draw you attention to a very important fact that’s central to all of this. Rhea has been arrested by the NCB, for some sort of connection to drugs. I am not going to elaborate because I don’t know what the details are and before you take the remote and switch to your favourite channel to find out, know that they don’t know either. She’s is NOT being arrested for Sushant’s murder or anything of the sort. No connection has been established there. This isn’t a victory for anyone.
And having drugs – the weed and the ganja- was a reason for arrest, you know it as well as I do, that most of us would be behind bars. Let’s not wash our dirty hands and scuttle to moral high ground just because we see celebrities take a fall.

Unless our standards are so low that just getting her arrested is some sort of moral victory and retribution. Then again, clearly we have no standards. We’ve been circling like sharks around Rhea’s family, her home to get a byte from her. We’ve forgotten our humanity, we’ve forgotten that we are dealing with coronavirus, we’ve simply concentrated on blaming someone. This is shockingly inhumane but I guess we shouldn’t have expected much from a country that snacks on a diet of blinkered media and hate mongering journalists. This is a witch hunt for Rhea and no matter how you put it, what you are burning at the stake are your own morals and conscience.
