Tamil Nadu CM To Push For Stricter Laws For Crimes Against Women And Children. Hopefully, All The Other States Will Follow Suit

If you follow Hauterfly closely, as you should, then you know that just yesterday, we spoke about the Pakistani PM, Imran Khan who wants to chemically castrate convicted rapists. He announced this after a gruesome rape in Pakistan has led to nation-wide protests. We discussed how despite it being an extremely tempting option, it’s not going to solve the problem of rapidly rising cases. Yes, we do need stricter laws and more viable solutions to curb gender-based violence. There is no denying that. Although while the Pakistani PM’s option can be kept on the back burner, I think the Tamil Nadu CM might be onto something. He has suggested mending the IPC to increase significantly increase the jail term for crimes against women and children.

On Wednesday, in the assembly session, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that steps would be taken to make the punishment for culprits of crimes against women and children, stricter. With the support of the central government, the TN CM wants to make amendments to the crime against women section of the Indian Penal Code. In the announcement, he mentioned the sections that would go through changes.

Under section 304B, dowry deaths, the minimum sentence of seven years will be increased to ten years.

Under section 354 B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), the provisions for a minimum of three years imprisonment will be raised to a minimum of five years and a maximum of seven years.

Furthermore, the sentence for repeated offences like stalking will be increased to 7 years instead of the original, 5 years. And under section 372 (Selling minors for the purposes of prostitution etc) and section 373 (Buying minors for purposes of prostitution etc), a minimum of seven years imprisonment and a maximum of life imprisonment will be recommended to the Centre.

If this goes through, at least one state in our country will have stricter and more stringent laws for crimes against women and children? We’re hoping that it is a huge deterrent to those constantly playing hide-and-seek with the law.  I am so glad that someone in our political system is looking at these problems and taking the right steps to ensure women safety. The Tamil Nadu CM’s decision comes at a crucial time when the state is witnessing a spike in gender-based crimes. Although this might not change the mindset of people when it comes to women, it will at least keep the criminals off the street for a longer time.

If I am being honest, I was surprised to read that a CM is taking up the issue of gender-based crimes. It’s been overlooked for so long. But better late than never, right? Hopefully, the centre concurs with these amendments and then all the states can enjoy stricter laws when it comes to crimes against women or children.
