Taapsee Pannu Could Play Mithali Raj’s Role In Her Biopic And We Think She’s A Great Choice

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the cricket World Cup has got all the eyeballs. By all, we mean all. We are watching matches that are eight hours long and we are so glued I can rattle off the jingles of ads that play during the commercial breaks. So we think that it’s a brilliant time to announce the making of the biopic of the captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team – Mithali Raj. And chances are Taapsee Pannu will play Mithali and we think that’s a great choice.

Apparently, this project was announced back in 2017 but there wasn’t much movement since then. While Taapsee has been zeroed in on by the makers, reports say that she hasn’t officially signed on the dotted line yet.

This is the season of biopics, there are plenty being made. And sportspersons lives seem the most interesting, there are natural ups and downs with wins and losses, so it’s only natural that anyone who seems remotely fun should have a biopic to their name.

But Mithali Raj truly does deserve a film. This 36-year-old has been leading the Indian Women’s Cricket team by example, taking the reins and she has a number of accolades to her name. She’s the only Indian cricketeer to score 2000 runs in T20Is. She is also the only player, male or female, to captain a team twice in an ICC ODI World Cup final, once in 2005 and then in 2017. And as recently as February 2019, she became the first woman to play in 200 ODI matches.

When asked about the movie back in 2017, Mithali had said, “Hoping that this movie inspires more people, especially young girls to take up sports as a career.” Though at that point, she did mention that she would like to see Priyanka Chopra play her in the movie.

Now, Priyanka may not be in the running, but with an impressive list of achievements, this is a biopic that we actually want to see. And Taapsee is a great choice for this. For many reasons. For starters, she’s already played the role of a hockey player in her movie Soorma. In fact, she also has a movie just coming out called Saandh Ki Aankh in which she plays a sharpshooter.
