Taapsee Pannu And Lakshmi Manchu Slam News Reports For The Media Lynching Of Rhea Chakraborty. Let The Authorities Do Their Job

On 14th June, when the news of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death reached my ears, I was extremely heartbroken. Of course, like the rest of the country, I believed the whole mental illness and depression story that had taken over social media in a matter of minutes after his death was announced. Then slowly and steadily, the case, instead of being ruled a suicide kept growing and along with it, so did all our curiosity.

Now, it’s two months later and his girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty has become a household name for all the wrong reasons. She and a few other of Sushant’s alleged friends have been accused of money laundering, abetment to suicide and forcefully drugging him. Even the Mumbai Police has received a lot of flak for not conducting a proper investigation. This series of unfortunate events began with Arnab Goswami and his explosive interview with Bollywood enemy number 1 (at the moment), Kangana Ranaut.

Now, if this was any other case, I would run through the whole thing and give you’ll a brief of all the developments. But well, there are so many twists and turns in this one that giving listing a chronological order of everything that has happened is next to impossible. It would be easier for me to just ask you’ll to just watch the news. Because well, that’s all that is airing nowadays. And that is precisely the biggest issue with the whole investigation. In the sense, that, it’s a media trial. Or in the words of Rhea, it’s a witch hunt.

If you have opened Twitter lately, you know that everyone has an opinion and netizens haven’t exactly been subtle. On the contrary, actually, based on circumstantial evidence and way before the CBI even interrogated her, Rhea had been pronounced guilty. The best part? Thanks to a certain news channel and the Twitterarti’s efforts, everyone is pinning SSR’s death on Rhea. Now, we don’t know what she is guilty of or even if she is guilty at all. What we do know is that this media trial is extremely unfair and horrid. Whatever happened to, innocent until proven guilty? Isn’t that the basis of our judiciary?

It seems like finally, a few people from Bollywood also feel this way. South actor Lakshmi Manchu took to Twitter to express how she felt about this whole wretched situation.

She said, “I thought a lot about if I should respond or not. I see so many people so silent because the media has made a monster out of a girl. I don’t know the truth and I want to know the truth and I hope the truth will come out in the most honest way. I have complete trust in the judiciary system and all the agencies that are involved in bringing justice to Sushant.”

Further adding, “But until then can we restrain ourselves from being evil and cruel and lynching of person and her entire family without knowing the facts. I can only imagine the pain the entire family is going through with these so-called media trials. If something like this happened to me I would want my colleagues to stand up for me at least the ones that know me to say back off hang on leave her alone and I ask all of you to do the same backoff hang on leave her alone until the entire truth is officially released. I am pained by what we have become. How are we being authentic if we don’t speak our heart when we have a voice to lend. I’m standing up for my colleague.”

There are a lot of conspiracy theories floating around talking about various things. And all these have been propagated by news channels and social media. This media trial is a huge hurdle for the CBI or any other law agencies who are looking into the matter. Let me give you an example to explain this better. Sushant’s house, where he allegedly committed suicide, is a crime scene. Right? We have all watched enough Crime Patrol and Criminal Minds to know that it’s not supposed to be tampered with. Then why are news channels giving tours of that house? Why are the contents of his room being telecast on TV and being used to persecute Rhea? Why are her WhatsApp chats, that are key pieces of evidence being leaked for the world to judge? This is not the job of a  news channel or social media.

After Laxmi took to Twitter, so did Pink actress, Taapsee Pannu. Replying to Laxmi’s story, she said, “I didn’t know Sushant on a personal level nor do I know Rhea but what I know is, it only takes to be a human to understand how wrong it is to overtake judiciary to convict someone who isn’t proven guilty. Trust the law of the land for your sanity and the deceased’s sanctity.”

We have to stop this media circus and let the CBI, the ED and the police do their job. This over-reporting and biased media trial has gone on long enough. It’s extremely unfair to Rhea and her family who are being hounded day and night by reporters. She might be guilty or she might be getting framed, either way, it’s not up to us to decide.
