Whenever people ask me how I ended up becoming a writer, I tell them how it wasn’t always the direction I was meant to go in. Having done my graduation in commerce and forced to take up a job in auditing considering it was the only career stream my father approved for me, I wasn’t knew I didn’t want to do this forever but the thought of telling my father I wanted to do something else was quite intimidating. And though I managed to turn my passion into my profession, I have to admit things would’ve been a lot different and smoother had I had his support and faith in me and my capabilities. But for Indian parents, the doctor, engineer and in my case, auditor professions are the only ones worthy of any respect. But it wasn’t so tough to understand for Steven Spielberg, the American filmmaker who has won the father of the year award, after being okay with his daughter’s unconventional professional choice.
Mikaela George, the 23-year-old daughter of Steven Spielberg, recently spilled the beans and came out clean about her career as a porn star and what was even more surprising, and to a large extent inspiring, was the fact that her father, Spielberg doesn’t just know of her choice but also supports it. And if that isn’t the making of an great father, we don’t know what is.
Mikaela was adopted by the filmmaker and his wife Kate Capshaw, and recently revealed in an interview with The Sun how she has started working as a porn star and is already self producing a few adult videos. And not just this, the spunky girl also opened up about her ambitions after she receives a sex worker license and shared how she’d love to be a dancer at a strip club too.

And much to everyone’s surprise, mainly because of just how stereotypical and superficial the society is, the Oscar winning filmmaker took this news rather well and very supportively. Mikaela revealed how she broke the news to her father through a FaceTime video call and more than being upset about it, they were left intrigued. And had it been our parents, we’d probably be hung up on first and then hung out to dry, with a very real threat to get bedakhal from the jaaydaat. Mostly, it would be ‘log kya kahenge?‘, the one thing parents turn to when nothing else works. Because what society thinks of you is more important than what makes you happy and brings you joy.
Often times, it’s hard for parents to let go of the vision they have for their kids for when they’ll grow up. And honestly, even if parents are cool with a child’s field of work, most of them wouldn’t be comfortable with a profession like that of a porn star. But kudos to the parent duo here who have shown immense patience, understanding and faith in the choice of his daughter’s controversial profession.
Giving your daughter or son the support to pursue whatever they want in life, takes a big heart and great courage and we guess, we could all learn a thing or two about parenthood from these guys.
