Singer Neha Bhasin Talks About Being Targeted Because She Is A Singer And Chooses To Dress Sexy. When Will We Stop Policing Women?

From Akh Kashni to Laung Gawacha to Swag se Swagat, Neha Bhasin is known to drop songs that are as savage as she is. From bold lyrics to memorable videos and music that lingers till long after you’ve heard it, Neha Bhasin is an unapologetic artist who has never minced her words, in her life or in her songs. Choosing to make her career in singing folk songs with a hint of modernity, Neha Bhasin is the modern day woman that the society might not see eye to eye with.

Being a strong independent woman, Neha Bhasin has had her own share of struggles and she opened up about them in a recent interview. Talking about how her music wasn’t just about doing playbacks in movies, but that they meant something to her, she said, “My journey has been topsy turvy. I started out as a pop singer, then pop died down, and I had to dig my feet into Bollywood which is not something I wanted actually. I didn’t know how to do it, I wasn’t trained to be a playback singer. Back in the day you didn’t have auto tune, you had to be a really good singer, music directors wouldn’t let you stand agar aapko gaana nahi aata toh,”

Going further into depth about her work and what comes with it in form of criticism, Neha also talked about the kind of hate and judgement she would receive from people for being a singer and wanting to dress in a way she called ‘sexy’. She shared, “I started writing it one and a half year back, and during the lockdown, got massively bullied by a certain fandom online. I also feel I have always been targeted just because I am a singer and I like to look sexy. I like to wear a certain clothing, and targeted for that a lot.”

She went on to share, “You see 18-19 year olds walking around in shorter clothes, nobody says anything. Just because I am a singer, I am supposed to be a sati Savitri. This whole angst was coming from there and Kehnde Rehnde happened. We shot it during the lockdown.”

And she had a point considering how stereotypical our society gets when they see women do anything that isn’t predefined for them by the society. Be it policing our clothes or our morals, a woman in today’s time who has a mind of her own is always intimidating. But we are glad that Neha Bhasin has learnt to take it all in her stride and doesn’t shy away from doing what she wants, and how she wants it.
