Simi Garewal Says Her Westernised Upbringing Made Her A Misfit In Bollywood. Erm, That Didn’t Stop Anyone Else!

Simi Garewal is back in the news. Apparently, we are going to meet her again as the host of a chat show. Now, we didn’t roll out the red carpet for this one because we have already seen too many chat shows and we aren’t sure what this rehash would have to offer. If rumours are to be believed, the show will kick off with Ranveer and Deepika as guests.

In a recent interview Simi Garewal opened up about her journey in Bollywood and said that she feels ‘privileged’ to work with some iconic filmmakers of Indian cinema. Simi Garewal was born and raised in London and was exposed to a different culture which caused hindrance to her finding a seamless fit in Hindi cinema. Simi said, “I did face difficulties here but that was not due to other people. They were my own difficulties. Like my own upbringing had thrown up. My westernised upbringing initially did not help me fit within the industry at that time.”

“Though if I would have come in now, I would have fit in well. When I came in, the industry was different. It was hard for me to fit in. Initially, there was a struggle. I did try and make the adjustments and tried to fit in. But I stayed the way I was,” the actress added. Simi Garewal recalls her the time she shot for Mera Naam Joker and says the film is still her favourite! “I gave a lot of myself in that film. The dialogues that I spoke, came from me. Even the clothes that I wore were all created and styled by me. Though a lot of people like ‘Karz’, Mera Naam Joker is still my favourite,” she said. Simi Garewal also enjoyed working with incredible filmmakers like, Raj Kapoor and Satyajit Ray.

During the 80’s the actress found interest in writing, direction and formed her own production company, Siga Arts International. Woman’s World (1983), was a T.V show in Doordarshan that was produced and directed by Simi. She also made a documentary titled Living Legend Raj Kapoor (1984). This was followed by a three-part documentary on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, India’s Rajiv (1991). Simi Garewal is supremely talented and also wrote and directed a Hindi feature film Rukhsat (1988), featuring Mithun Chakraborty, Anuradha Patel and Amrish Puri.
