Shoaib Akhtar is in the news again. And this time because he called Sarfaraz, the Pakistan cricket team captain, ‘brainless’ after a heartbreaking loss to India on 16th June. Shoaib said that the captain made all the wrong decisions leading to a defeat and it could have been handled better. But what’s also emerged, in a report in Economic Times, is that this fast pacer was a huge fan of Sonali Bendre.

Okay, first of all, we get it, the woman is stunning. Her face is the kind that can launch a thousand ships. And hers is a journey that will inspire anyone. She’s brave, spirited and powerful and we simply can’t get enough of her. So when it was revealed that Shoaib Akhtar was a fan of the actress, we could see why.

It was revealed the Shoaib Akhtar fell head over heels in love with Sonali Bendre after watching the movie English Babu Desi Mem. In fact, the cricketer would carry a picture of the actress in his wallet! Apparently, his room was also filled with posters of Sonali. Turns out, Sonali , on the other hand, had no idea who he was. She was often hounded with phone calls when a cricket match was taking place, and she had to constantly give out statements about her being unaware of his existence. In an inteview, she once said, “I don’t know any Pakistani cricketer named Shoaib Akhtar as I’m not a cricket fan at all. It’s funny that every time India plays Pakistan, the media swamps me with calls to find out about him. I’ve heard he’s my fan. All I can say is I’m thankful for that.”

We think Sonali Bendre may have dodged a bullet by not knowing about Shoaib Akhtar. There has been a long-standing romance between cricket and Bollywood – Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi- but this is one we are glad nothing happened with.

For starters, Shoaib Akhtar is known for having quite the temper, for having a bad attitude on field, and in general, not being very level-headed. Of course, that’s him playing the sport. But if any of this were to translate off the field it would suck. We are just glad Sonali Bendre found love with someone else.
