Shilpa Shetty Says She Doesn’t Mind Delaying Her Movies Until 2021, Health Is More Important Than Her Bollywood Comeback. That’s Sensible
It’s been a while since we saw Shilpa Shetty Kundra on the big screen, hasn’t it? The small screens on the other hand, she has had quite the entertaining presence: From judging reality television, to posting her cheat day meals and experiences of motherhood on her Instagram and even becoming popular on TikTok (before it was banned) for her hilarious videos with hubby Raj Kundra. But is she content with this much content? For now, yes. Because even as her two Bollywood comeback vehicles—Hungama 2 and Nikamma—have been delayed due to coronavirus, Shilpa thinks it’s for the best.
The COVID-19 pandemic has put a dampener on everyone’s plans for 2020, so much so that we’d all like to cancel this year completely. For the entertainment industry, the lockdown meant pushing the releases of several anticipated movies to the latter half of the year. But since it now looks like a while before we reopen cinema halls in India, many producers are choosing to release their movies on OTT platforms like Netflix (Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl and 16 other titles), Amazon Prime Video (Gulabo Sitabo, Shakuntala Devi), and Disney+ Hostar (Dil Bechara).

For Shilpa Shetty Kundra, this year would’ve marked her comeback to the big screen after 13 years. In August 2019, she had taken to her Instagram to announce that she would be seen in director Sabbir Khan’s Nikamma. The film would star YouTuber Shirley Setia and Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’s Abhimanyu Dasani, while the rest of the cast was still being finalised.

Yesssssssss, it’s true! My sabbatical of 13 long years comes to an end.. I am so excited to announce that the film you will see me next in is #Nikamma , directed by @sabbir24x7 (cast still being finalised) featuring these amazing and talented actors @abhimanyud @shirleysetia @sonypicturesin. The film’s shooting began last year but was halted due to the lockdown.
In December 2019, Shetty made another announcement. She was going to be a part of the spiritual sequel to Priyadarshan’s 2003 comic caper, Hungama, starring Meezan J, Paresh Rawal and Pranitha Subhash. In March this year, a poster of the film was released to mark cast member Meezaan’s birthday. Hungama 2 was slated for an August 14, 2020 release, however, parts of it still remain to be shot since the lockdown halted all shoots in March.
Although, looks like even if both the movies were done shooting, they would’ve pushed their releases to 2021 anyway. Shetty revealed that neither of the film’s makers were keen on an OTT release, which seems to be the order of the day for Bollywood.
“I’ve had a word with Sabbir (Khan; director of Nikamma) and he’d not like to release it on the web. Ours is a very big film, we want to hear it on a Dolby digital surround sound. Even Ratan ji (Ratan Jain; producer Hungama 2) doesn’t want to do it. These are not OTT films. Everything happens for the best, we’ll get to it when we get to it.”
In fact, this delay might’ve actually been a blessing in disguise for Shilpa Shetty Kundra because she’s getting to oodles of quality time with her newborn daughter Samisha! Shetty, who already has an eight-year-old son Viaan, and hubby Raj Kundra welcomed a baby girl via surrogacy in February this year. With two movies on her schedule before, Shetty was unsure of how she’d manage. “We had done it in a way that it was going to be easy for me post my daughter’s birth, but I still wouldn’t have got the time like I do now, with Samisha; this is priceless,” said Shetty.

With shootings being allowed to resume amidst necessary safety precautions, does it mean that we’ll see Shilpa Shetty Kundra venture out to finish her shoots? Yeah, not likely.
“I’m someone who lives in the now, you’ve to take it as it comes, I don’t think my reintroduction on the big screen is more important than health. I don’t want to step out of the house as it is,” she was quoted saying.
And isn’t that the outlook most of us who can afford to pause should be taking?
