Sheryl Sandberg, COO Of Facebook, Advises Young Women To Not Do Their Boyfriend’s Laundry. And Here’s Why

There are entire books, movies and memes pages dedicated to how difficult it is to understand women. For men, there are nearly none. And that’s surprising because we have come across all kinds of men, from toxic to emotionally absent and everything in between. And while most of the times, advice from my mother or from my very single friends comes in handy when it comes to my dating life, this time we are leaning into the words of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.

Speaking with PEOPLE Digital Deputy Editor Charlotte Triggs, Sheryl Sandberg who is the COO of Facebook COO, , recently opened up about some advice for young women out there in love, especially in times of the pandemic when everyone is stuck at home. She wrote, “I’ve been saying this forever, and I’m going to keep saying this: we need a better balance of work in the home.” And even thought she had just started making her point, we could see ourselves nod in agreement already.

She continued saying, “For any young women, if you have a boyfriend, and you’re about to go do your boyfriend’s laundry: don’t do it! You’re going to be doing that guy’s laundry for the next five decades.” We are putting that on a placard and posting it around town.

Not only was she right about maintaining a balance in household, making your partner a real partner in everyday life and dividing chores and responsibilities, but also threw light on how easy it is to be taken for granted, and be stereotyped for a role at your own house. You do it once, chances are you’re gonna have to do it again, and until the end of the time. Be it washing his dirty underwear or suppressing your own feelings in an argument to protect his.

Going on to talk about the different stressors that women are experiencing during the pandemic, Sheryl also said how women, even before the pandemic even hit were doing a double shift of first working at the office, and then coming back home and attending to the family needs. With the lockdown in place, and taking care of work, children, food, family’s needs, they are down to working a ‘double double shift’, she says. And there have been enough studies to suggest the same- that women are now suffering with the double burden syndrome.

She also said, “Women are getting crushed by the workload at work and the workload at home. This is a crisis, and we need to pick our heads up and see it before it erodes all the gains we’ve made over the past decade.” The pandemic hasn’t been easy for anyone, especially women and today if we don’t mend our own ways and fight for the equality at home, we really can bid our decade worth of efforts, a goodbye.
