Shatrughan Sinha Commented On The #MeToo Movement And Really, It’s Not Funny

Bollywood has always had a very odd sense of humour. I mean, if it has one at all.  Or maybe it is just the veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha who took a moment to shove his entire foot into his mouth with a unnecessary, ill-timed comment on the #MeToo movement!

He took the famous quote, ‘Behind every successful man, there is a woman’, and turned it into “behind the fall of a very successful man is also a woman”. Mr. Sinha, this quote has already been milked for all its worth. And while we understand your need to sound eloquent (you don’t), you are overstepping a line. In fact, you’ve gone so far away from the line, you can barely see it.

Shatrughan was at the launch of debutant author Dhruv Somani’s A Touch of Evil. A perfectly innocuous occasion requiring no dredging up of any muck of any sort. Not content with this,  Shatrughan Sinha remarked, “Today is the time of #MeToo, and there shouldn’t be any shame or hesitation to say that behind a successful man’s fall is a woman. Behind the troubles and infamy of successful men, there have been mostly women that I have seen in this movement.”

He further said, digging the hole really deep at this point, “I really call myself fortunate that in today’s times, despite everything that I have done, my name hasn’t come out in the #MeToo movement. Hence, I listen to my wife and often take her as a shield with me so that even if there’s nothing, I can show, ‘I am happily married, my life is good’.”

While many in the audience broke into laughter, we imagine they were pity laughs. Because we are less than amused by the actor’s rather dull and offensive wit and humour.

If you’ve done questionable stuff and your name hasn’t turned up, be very, very scared and grateful. Not make a mockery of the movement and please, what a pathetic excuse to use your wife as a shield. Maybe he should have take his own advice and just been, ‘Khamosh!’
