Look At Selena Gomez In A Swimsuit, Proudly Showing Off A Scar That She Would Hide Before. Love This Confidence!

I could never figure why anyone, especially women, were so fervent to hide their scars. I mean, they are so cool. They tell a story of something you’ve done or gone through. It could be a silly memory of getting a burn mark during an imprudent science experiment you did as a kid or some serious stuff you’ve been through like surviving an accident or a surgery you underwent just like music sensation Selena Gomez. More often than not, we tend to hide these scars with makeup or clothing while we should really be flaunting them. And that’s exactly what Selena did recently.

In 2017, Selena suffered organ damage as a complication of lupus, a disease she was diagnosed with two years before, and had to get a kidney transplant. The surgery left her and her donor, best friend Francia Raísa, with a scar. She confessed that she used to cover up the scar before, even designed a high-waist bikini last year that perfectly hid it. But she doesn’t shy away from showing it off anymore as she feels confident, now more than ever.

She posted a photo of herself in a gorgeous blue swimsuit and owned her scar like a true diva. She wrote in the caption, “When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through…and I’m proud of that. T – Congratulations on what you’re doing for women, launching @lamariette whose message is just that…all bodies are beautiful.” We are here for the body confidence!

Selena is many things. She’s a singer, actor, most followed celebrity on Instagram and now a makeup mogul. That sort of success and fame comes at a price and that is being scrutinised and judged for your every look and every move. It wasn’t unusual for her to feel conscious and insecure about her scar and it is clear that she used to struggle with this in the past.

Last year, she collaborated with her friend Theresa Mingus’ swimwear brand, Krahs Swim, and designed three swimwear styles, one of which came with a special purpose. They were high-waisted bikini bottoms that covered up the transplant scar on her inner thigh. She said she liked bathing suits and wanted to feel comfortable in it. Clearly, she has not only come to terms with her scar but has become more confident about it and feels beautiful in it.

She is not the only celebrity who’s paraded her scar and given us major real beauty goals. Kylie Jenner has always embraced the scar on her leg and isn’t afraid to hide it even in her photoshoots and Instagram posts. Back home, Tahira Kashyap showed off the scar she got after surgery for breast cancer. She wrote in the caption, I truly embrace all my scars as they are my badges of honour. There is nothing known as perfect. Happiness lies in truly accepting yourself. This was a tough one for me. But this picture was my decision as I want to celebrate not the disease but the spirit with which I endured.” Other celebrities who wear their scars proudly are Sonali Bendre and Padma Lakshmi.

These celebrities truly wear their scars like war paint and inspire us to move past physical perfection and love our flaws. It sure takes time to embrace your body but it’s totally worth it. And Selena’s post is proof! What looked like an innocent Instagram post turned out to be more than a pretty picture and a shoutout to a friend’s swimwear brand. It is a bold beauty statement which screams body positivity and confidence.

Selena Gomez is followed and looked up to by millions of young girls, and this would be truly inspiring for them. It’s great to see her appreciating the flaws of her body and inspiring women to feel comfortable and proud in their own skin. After all, scars make us who we are—and that is, unique and strong AF!
