Sourav Ganguly Dismisses Daughter Sana’s Views On The CAA. Overprotective Dad Or Just Not Wanting To Ruffle Feathers?

I have been born and raised in Delhi, and being the capital city, we often find ourselves in midst of political turmoil, from political to apolitical. And currently, the situation of the city that I am living in is well, quite nefarious. I am nervous to step out of my house every day, not just because it’s Delhi and I’m a woman, but because the riots relating to the Citizenship Amendment Bill has created a divide and everything is precariously balanced right now.

From metros skipping stations near the university area, to students and police letting violence get the best of them, there has been a lot of protest and resistance. And while many have taken to the streets to be vocal about their views, others have taken to social media- armchair activists as they are known. As has BCCI President, Saurav Ganguly’s daughter Sana.

Choosing to not stay quiet, the 18-year-old daughter of former Indian skipper and current BCCI president’s daughter Sana Ganguly shared her two cents on the topic by sharing a rather powerful excerpt from Khushwant Singh’s book, ‘The End of India’ that said,  “Every fascist regime needs communities and groups it can demonize in order to thrive. It starts with one group or two. But it never ends there. A movement built on hate can only sustain itself by continually creating fear and strife.”

It continued, “Those of us today who feel secure because we are not Muslims or Christians are living in a fool’s paradise. The Sangh is already targeting the Leftist historians and “Westernized” youth. Tomorrow it will turn its hate on women who wear skirts, people who eat meat, drink liquor, watch foreign films, don’t go on annual pilgrimages to temples, use toothpaste instead of danth manjan, prefer allopathic doctors to vaids, kiss or shake hands in greeting instead of shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. No one is safe. We must realize this if we hope to keep India alive.”

Now, we’d be lying if we didn’t admit to just how on point Kushwant Singh’s words seemed, especially since for present day India. In fact, her tweet on the topic was shared and commented on by many, out of which one said, “BCCI President @SGanguly99‘s daughter Sana Ganguly just won my heart by this post. Incredible maturity from an 18 year old.”

However, Saurav Ganguly was of quite an opposite opinion, as he tweeted “Please keep Sana out of all this issues .. this post is not true .. she is too young a girl to know about anything in politics”. Casting her daughter and her thoughts aside, Saurav was quick to alienate her from the political statement and it has compelled us to think whether it’s the politician in him speaking or just an overprotective father.

Think about it, him being the BCCI president, puts him in a position where what he says matters and often becomes a statement he needs to stand by. And so, when his daughter makes a statement, it is likely to become his words by association. But then on the other hand, we can’t ignore how having a political view on the subject as sensitive as this one has all the potential to piss the wrong people off and more so when you’re somewhat in the limelight because of your father. So no wonder he wanted her daughter to steer clear of the turmoil.

Then again, she’s a grown woman with a right to vote and to be this dismissive of her reeks of overtones of Indian parenting that requires children to simply fall in line. While we certainly think Sana should have her opinion, we are going to let this pass. I guess every parent wants to protect their child and this probably just came naturally to Sourav. The political climate is volatile.
