I have always been a sucker for a good cop movie be it Singham, Rowdy Rathore or the OG Zanjeer (courtesy: my father). But I have always wondered why no woman has ever been portrayed as a tough cop so fiercely. In real life, there are hundreds of women police officers who are out keeping our city safe, so where’s the representation? Then in 2014, we saw Rani Mukerji in her comeback movie Mardaani. She played a strong police officer fighting villains and taking down a child trafficking ring. It was one of the only Bollywood cop movies with a female protagonist to do so well on the box office. So, you can understand our excitement when the teaser trailer for the sequel to Mardaani came out.
The 38-second teaser trailer which dropped earlier today, begins with a police raid and the word Mardaani spelt out with silhouette clippings of Rani from the movie. At the helm of the raid is Rani reprising the role of Superintendent of Police Shivani Roy. She dressed in a full police uniform, looking more determined than ever. Needless to say, if a small clipping has left us wanting more, we are sure the movie will have a lot more to offer.
The teaser also shows her delivering a really Bollywood-like dialogue and while the words, “She wont stop until they don’t stop,” turn up on the screen giving us a peek of what the story line will be. The movie releases on 13th December this year. In this sequel, Rani’s character Shivani is pitted against a 21-year-old villain whose character she has earlier described as “pure evil.” This cop drama produced under the YRF banner marks the directorial debut of Gopi Puthran, the writer of the prequel, Mardaani.
It needs to be emphasised time and time again that we need more movies like these. Action packed, investigative dramas helmed by strong women characters. We are eagerly waiting to see Rani go all bold and daring on the silver screen, you should be too!
