Rangoli Chandel’s Reaction To Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak’s Trailer Is Touching. This Is A Story That Needs To Be Told.

Laxmi Agarwal was 15 years old when a guy almost twice her age threw a beer bottle full of acid on her. Why? Because she rejected his advances. It’s been 14 years since that day and throughout it all she has exhibited immense resilience. She has fought not just for herself but also tried her best to protect other women from meeting the same fate by seeking law amendments that can possibly reduce such acid attacks in India. That’s a story that deserves to be told and we’ve all been waiting for the trailer of Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak, which does just that. So yesterday, when it dropped on the internet, not a single soul who watched it remain unmoved – or so I can assume. When I watched it, I had tears in my eyes and this, when I don’t even know what it feels like. Rangoli Chandel, who is an acid attack survivor herself was deeply moved by the trailer and rightly so.

She tweeted in support of Chhapaak, “Wow!!! Everyone should see this film, amazing.” Rangoli further added how this one’s going to be a heart-wrenching, tear-jerking film, “Meghna and Deepika will earn a lot of tears from this film, what my family and I went through along with the prejudice we faced was worse than death… the story of an acid attack survivor need to reach this nation, praying that it works.”

India is brimming with toxic masculinity and the number of crimes that happen against women is so huge, I wonder how many monsters our country breeds. According to a report by India Spend, as many as 2.5 million crimes against women were reported over the last decade and of course, a huge number goes unreported. Dowry deaths, sexual crimes, human trafficking, honour killings, domestic violence and acid attacks, etc. – there’s just so much a woman in India is in danger of.

Rangoli, had recently opened up about her ordeal. She had spoken about how a guy threw acid on her because she rejected his proposal and how they had beaten up Kangana brutally simultaneously. She spoke about having to get 54 surgeries done and the struggles she still faces and beauty is not even on the list.

I have so much respect for these women who possess so much strength and Laxmi is exemplary of that. Laxmi, alongside another acid attack survivor Rupa, moved the Supreme Court with a Public Interest Litigation. The petition sought a new law or amendments to the existing provisions in the Indian Penal Code, Indian Evidence Act and Criminal Procedure Code to be more equipped for dealing with acid attacks. She also requested for a complete ban on the sale of acid, which was then very easily available. Because of them, today, acid is not sold without a photo id – at least not legally.

Deepika Padukone broke down during the trailer launch and said, “Rarely do you come across a story where you have to sit through an entire narration, usually you have to sit the entire process and then think whether you want to do a film or not. It’s not often when you come across a story where you know instantly in the first few minutes after meeting a directing that this is what you want to commit your life too and Chhapaak is that for me.”

In the era that also have Kabir Singh, which is synonymous with toxic masculinity, we badly need this movie. We need Chhapaak; the country is already shook with the Hyderabad rape case and even though the perpetrators were killed in an encounter, we still need to keep the fight on. We need better laws!
