PeeCee Reveals She Faced Sexual Harassment And We’re Glad She Spoke Up

The #MeToo movement, that came about in India in October of 2018, when Tanushree Dutta spoke up, about how she was sexually harassed by Nana Patekar on the sets of Horn OK Please!, is still going strong. The movement gained momentum, giving the women a unified and strong medium to voice out the harassment they’ve faced in the various facets of life.

At first, reading up about the perpetrators and coming across the long list of victims, only ever sparked two kinds of emotions in me – one of disappointment and the other of anger. But now, as time goes by, the reality has settled in, and with the names that keep coming up, I can’t help but feel empowered, to know that there are women, no actually, successful women in every industry, who may not have spoken up against the injustice just back then, are doing it now.

Priyanka Chopra, in latest news, has commented on this telling her story about going through sexual harassment years back. She says, “We always had a voice. Just nobody heard us. Now because of the support we are giving each other, nobody can shut us down. And that’s an incredibly powerful thing to see. Now if I have a story I don’t feel I am alone anymore – and I am not ashamed of it.” while she was speaking about the movement at the World Summit 2019.

She further spoke about how sexual harassment at the workplace had become a ‘norm’ which is probably why it wouldn’t surprise her to find out that, “everybody in this room has probably faced one because it had become a norm with women”.

No matter how saddening it is to hear, looking at women like her, who gather courage to speak about it, is exactly what the need of the hour is. Major part of the problem is the lack of open and honest conversations, and with revelations like these, women don’t just feel inspired, but they are reminded that they aren’t waging a lone battle.
