Parineeti Chopra Says Dowry Is Like Buying A Girl And We Couldn’t Agree More With Her

Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra starrer, Jabariya Jodi is all set to hit the theaters on August 12, 2019 and the duo are on their promotional tour. In an interview, Parineeti Chopra shared her thoughts on the sensitive topic of the dowry system. Jabariya Jodi has a serious take on the  practice of dowry and it’s infused with subtle humour.  The duo also revealed some shocking facts revolving around the subject. Parineeti Chopra has always spoken about the things that are important and need to be talked about.

Speaking on the premise of the film, the actress said,”Everyone knows that dowry is illegal and immoral but they practice it. What makes me angry is that people have renamed it ‘gift’ so that it sounds good. Dowry simply means that you are putting a price on the girl and buying her.” Even though the dowry system was abolished in 1961, Parineeti Chopra is shocked and extremely disheartened that it is considered as a gift even in today’s time!

“We call ourselves modern but then what are we doing? To look superior, we are asking the girls’ families for money and luxurious things. It is the unfortunate scenario of our country,” Parineeti Chopra told IANS. Jabariya Jodi is a film that revolves around abducting the groom and forcing them to marry girls, mostly at gunpoint. This crime is known as “pakadwavivah” (forced marriage) and is rampant Bihar for years now. Often, such forced marriage is an outcome of the family of the groom demanding a hefty dowry under the guise of a gift. While we aren’t saying this is a solution, the movie seeks to explore that side of this practise. And that is exactly what Parineeti said.

“Although ‘pakadwa vivah‘ is an anti-dowry practice, it is wrong. You cannot just kidnap someone and force them to get married. However, if there is no demand of dowry, there will be no ‘pakdwa vivah‘. I request people to stop putting a price on girl’s life,” Parineeti said. Parineeti Chopra will also be seen in her two major projects apart from Jabariya Jodi. She is gearing up for the ace shuttler, Saina Nehwal’s biopic and the Hindi remake of The Girl On The Train.

Speaking up about her portrayal in Saina Nehwal’s biopic Parineeti Chopra said, “It’s really difficult to play somebody who is respected globally. I know there will be comparisons, and I am prepared for that. I want to do justice while portraying Saina because she has achieved a lot in her life. I want to make everyone feel proud,” she said, adding: “For this role, I had to come out of my comfort zone. No one would have thought that I will play a sportsperson in my life, but here I am. There are multiple challenges. I hope I conquer them all.”
