Nora Fatehi Talks About How We Treat Foreigners In This Country And In Bollywood. We Should Be Ashamed!

We look at Bollywood stars and celebrities through our rose tinted glasses, thinking, ‘What a wonderful life it is.’ You are surrounded by luxury and working on fancy projects, basking in the glamour of fame and at some point, the lines start to blur.  We believe that this is their reality. That they do not have problems. Because more than often, we don’t know any better. We don’t know of the struggles that these celebrities go through to make a mark in the industry. We don’t know of the trauma behind that fame and sometimes we don’t even want to find out. Except, things are changing now as more and more stars have been coming out to talk about their experiences. Nora Fatehi being one of the most recent.

Nora Fatehi, is the current dancing sensation of the nation. She’s taking over millions of hearts one thumka at a time, the latest being the hit remake of O Saki Saki in Batla House. And she revealed that it wasn’t all hunky dory for her when she came to India and specifically Bollywood. In an interview,  she talked about her initial struggles in the industry and her experiences getting bullied at the hand of many agents. She said, “Life for foreigners in India is very difficult. We go through a lot and people don’t even know. They take our money. It’s happened to me. I remember my first agency who got me here from Canada. They were really aggressive in terms of behaviour and I didn’t feel like I was guided the right way. So, I wanted to leave them and in order to do that, they told me ‘we are not going to give you your money.’ And I lost Rs 20 lakhs at that time, which I had made from my ad campaigns. But I thought sacrificing it would be for a bigger picture.”

Clearly the dancer and actress who began her career by appearing in a Bollywood film Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans, did not have it easy. More so because the industry despite lusting after whiter-toned and exotic models and actresses, is still furiously hostile to them, an irony.  Nora continued further by saying, “I had to share an apartment with 8 girls. I walked in to this apartment, I was shocked and I was freaking out. My roommates stole my passport, I had to leave India and go back to Canada for a while.” So much for Atithi Devo Bhava, or maybe it is just that, we never go beyond treating them as more than just guests.

Nora also revealed how her not knowing Hindi in the beginning was an excuse used constantly to criticise her. She said, “I started learning Hindi but the auditions were very traumatic for me. I wasn’t really mentally prepared and I made a fool of myself. People were really unforgiving. They wouldn’t just be mean, they would laugh in front of my face as if I’m some circus. They would bully me. It was humiliating. I used to cry while travelling back to my home. There was this one casting agent who once told me, ‘We don’t need you here. Go back’. I’ll never forget that.”

What is more irksome is that for some odd reason, Bollywood seems awfully forgiving to its other actors, particularly the ones who have been accused in the #MeToo movement, what with all the roles and work they offer them without a stitch of remorse. But when it comes to going easy on the ones who are struggling with work, giving it their blood and sweat, we are relentless.

However, after facing her share of hardships, the actress/entertainer continued to take everything in her stride, and has now become a household name with back-to-back songs that have all of us singing and dancing to every beat. The actress is currently shooting for her upcoming film, Street Dancer 3, along with stars Shraddha Kapoor and Varun Dhawan.
