Nigella Lawson Just Called A Chutney A Jalapeno Salsa And Desi Twitter Wasn’t Having Any Of It
There are certain foods that people around the world eat – just versions of it. For example, the samosa finds itself transformed into a sambousek in the Middle East, empanada in Mexico and various other things in other cultures. And no one can rightfully stake a claim to any of these. But if it’s been a staple in one part of the world and you do nothing to relate it back to the country you’ve been inspired by, you might find yourself at the receiving end of some trolling. As Nigella Lawson recently did. You know, when she called a chutney- an age old recipe used to go with practically everything in desi households – a jalapeno salsa.
For those of you who are don’t know who Nigella Lawson is let me tell you she is a famed English food writer who has authored multiple recipe books. But we know her because she makes food look so sexy. When she slathers on the butter and the cream on her sandwiches and cakes, we are salivating at our homes.

She took to Twitter to do what she does most Fridays- shared a recipe. The usual, you’d think. Except, this salsa recipe got her more spice than she expected. She called it “Coriander and Jalapeno Salsa” and we raised our eyebrows. Yes, it might be unique to you but we’ve been making it in our households forever and it’s a accompaniment to, well, everything. We appreciate you trying to give the humble chutney a more finessed name but desi Twitter wasn’t having any of it.

In India we call it simple plain green chutney , a staple of most kitchens and made fresh everyday with a wee bit variation in flavours in various households

Though after a series of tweets by Indians telling her it’s chutney she finally admitted, “Yes, much the same as Indian chutney,” she said. Oh well, okay then. Now that we have been suitably credited, we shall all be on our merry way.
