Nandita Das’ New Video ‘India’s Got Colour’ Is The Official Anthem To End Our Fair Skin Obsession And We Love It!

They say India is a country of many religions, colours, cultures and languages. And an average layman listening to this might just accept and nod to that information, but not me. Because when you’ve been living in a country like India for so long, you realise how all of this is just a glorious way of hiding the truth. Which is that no matter how forward thinking we get, people still let their obsession with fair skin get the best of them. A fact that actor and director Nandita Das has been trying to change for a few years now. She recently dropped a video addressing the same, titled ‘India’s Got Colour.’

Adding the caption, “A fun and quirky music video that furthers the conversation of skin colour bias, and urges us to celebrate the diversity of India in skin colour. After all, we are 1.3 billion people, and have that many shades of skin tones!” to her video, Nandita and several other celebrities from Gul Panag, Ratna Pathak Shah, Swara Bhaskar, Divya Dutta, Radhika Apte, Vikrant Massey, Tillotama Shome and Ali Fazal are all part of this wonderful and extremely important campaign, as they talk about how it’s time to bust stereotypes against dusky and dark skin tones.

Growing up, I have had my own qualms with accepting my skin colour as one the most intense and beautiful shades because with its constant mentions of it, never makes it easier for you. Even now, it isn’t the society that has toned its taunts down, but I’ve risen above reacting to such meaningless nonsense. The video, that shows instances of a mother asking her daughter avoid stepping out in the sun to prevent her skin from getting tanned, to winners of reality shows being chosen not due to their talent, but because their skin radiates the right kind of white, it puts across the various painful but true incidents that plague the country today.

Rather than taking pride in our skin, the society dilutes your mind into thinking it’s not enough, but not anymore. Especially with such powerful videos and campaigns coming up, it becomes imperative to spread the right kind of message which is the simple fact that beauty lies in every shade of mankind. Fair is lovely, as is dark beautiful. As long as we continue to live on the surface, we would never be able to look past such stereotypes and see beauty for what it really is – all pervasive.

The video that has received enormous support and appreciation, for it rightly celebrates all the 1.3 billion shades of Indians, and is undoubtedly the best thing I have seen all day and would urge everyone to see too. Because after all it’s true, ‘India’s Got Colours’!
